Backstage @ BETHANY WILLIAMS Spring/Summer 2019 – READ ALL ABOUT IT

Brit designer Bethany Williams is back with a bang following on from her debut collection last season “Women for Change”, this time taking us on a trip down memory lane to a place once known as the centre of any local community, the Library. A place we can all connect with at some point in our childhood or adolescent years especially and for S/S19, Bethany challenges us to remember why. Photography by Karl Slater. Entitled “No Address Needed to Join”,the colourful collection is again produced from recycled and organic materials but this time around the materials used are linked closely to the story of books and libraries, with Bethany taking book waste and creating the quirky streetwear ready fabrics, featuring Hachette UK’s book art throughout the printed textiles.

The chunky but funky knitted ensembles, whilst not necessarily Spring/Summer must-haves, became the standouts. Like the oversized red dungarees or the off-white voluminous jumper and matching shorts, created in collaboration with Wool and Gang’s Heal the Wool yarn with all sampling hand knitted by Bethany’s mother on the Isle of Man where she grew up. Whilst denim elements within the collection were sourced and unpicked before being reconstructed and hand printed into completely new garments.

In addition, Bethany’s relaxed presentation collaborated with niche socially engaged modelling agency TIH Models, exclusively featuring individuals in unique living conditions. It’s refreshing to see a young designer so passionate about the world around them, through their materials and their art, but with a collection so rooted in charitable aid it’s difficult to find the story and influence behind the collection itself. Something I’d like to see coming through more from Bethany moving forward next season.
