Berlin! 08-10.06.2018 Torstrassen Festival 2018 ∞ FOREVER

From the 8th to the 10th of June 2018, the Torstraßen Festival under the theme ” Forever ” presents primarily pop music from Berlin along the present and the future contrary to yesterday and the regression. TSF “Forever” is not meant as a hype, but as an open question into the unknown, addressed to the festival, the music and the audience. In its eighth edition, the festival presents music that does not shy away from utopia and dreams of thinking experiments that capitalist realism seems to have swallowed up.

On the festival’s core day, Saturday, June 9, the genre-spanning program will feature over 35 concerts in 9 locations in Berlin-Mitte. Featured in the line-up are a sneak preview of the new DENA album, delimited electric rap from Catnapp, avant-garde musician Lucrecia Dalt, art-trap duo Klitclique, DIY romantic Sean Nicholas Savage and the psychedelic-Turkish pop collaboration from Tellavision and Derya Yildirim. For the first time, the TSF is showing a film program on Saturday, June 9, curated by musician JJ Weihl. At the end of the festival, the TSF, in collaboration with the pan-Arab collective Arabstazy and label operator Daniel Haaksman, will be presenting an after-show party on two floors at the Kunsthaus ACUD.

On Sunday, the 10th of June, the festival will go to the Volksbühne’s big house for a whole day. In cooperation with the London Independent Label Market , a label market will be held from 12 to 18 o’clock with well-known and yet to be discovered independent labels such as 4AD, Ninja Tune, Domino, Erased Tapes, Monkeytown or! K7 Records, as well as a supporting program of DJ Sets and Talks. Popstar and Torstraßenfestival alumni Alex Cameron, Berlin’s best italo-pop duo Itaca, and Polaris Prize winner Lido Pimienta will celebrate the grand finale of the Torstraßenfestival.

TSF’18 Opening: Talk, Sneak Peak Tianzhuo Chen, Neukölln Country Club, Karaoke
Friday, June 8, 2018, from 8 pm, Kunsthaus ACUD

At the opening event of the festival on Friday, June 8, Leonhard Hieronymi, author of the literary manifesto “Ultraromantik”, musician and futurologist André Uhl and others, will discuss in the ACUD Studio at 8 pm under the title “FOREVER – Music for a Different Reality” the topics future, infinity and music. In cooperation with the curators of Karma Ltd.At the same time Extended will give a first insight into the installation of the Chinese artistTianzhuo Chen in the ACUD Gallery, which will then turn into a multimedia performance on Saturday as part of the program. Afterwards, the Hole Boys in the ACUD Club will present another edition of the legendary and always new show of the ” Neukölln Country Club ” with several Berlin guest musicians. The evening ends with live karaoke presented by Berlin underground magazine The Chop.

In the 8th edition, the festival Saturday brings together more than 35 musicians in 9 locations under the motto “Forever” . “These work in their work on the topic of the future, and in various, sometimes contrary positions from utopia to apocalypse. The theme is also an urgent one in pop music, “explains co-curator Norman Palm . Directly at 2 pm, Andreas Spechtl musically introduces the festival theme with his perspective on “Thinking About Tomorrow and How to Build It”, while at the same time the performance of Tianzhuo Chen starts in the ACUD.

With 70% local share, the focus of the TSF this year is again on Berlin-based artists who have moved in from near and far. Above all, it is about the coming together and visualization of aspiring artists. “If you know only a few names in the line-up, then this should not scare the guests, but invite you to embark on a journey of discovery through the festival day and night, and so in just one day an overview of currently working in Berlin artists which you would otherwise only be able to do in many long nights in small clubs in the city, “says Andrea Goetzke, festival organizer .

The highlights of the program range from international Berliners such as Lucrecia Dalt with fresh album and geological sound metaphors, the Italian electro-acoustic musician and solo drummer Andrea Belfi ; Rapper Denitza Todorova aka DENA with new sounds;Monkeytown newcomer Catnapp , Brian Eno collaborator and sound avant-gardist Tom Rogerson to the atypical Raverin Wilted Woman . The TSF is also known for its international scene rambles outside of Berlin, which bring special new discoveries to light such as the Icelandic goth rapper Countess Malaise , the synth pop band Nisantashi Primary School from Kiev or the scary-beautiful psychedelic folk by the Danish Ida Wenøe . In addition, the TSF is building a special bridge to Ghana this year with the sound of traditional rhythms from King Ayisoba , DJ Keyzuz , and Jowaa.

For the first time this year there will be a film program in the ACUD Cinema, presented by the musician JJ Weihl (Fenster / Discovery Zone), under her film project Videokills. The two music documentaries “Conny Plank: The Potential of Noise” and “Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution” are shown, followed by a Q & A with the creators Stephan Plank and Milena Fessmann , respectively Yony ​​Leyser .

At the end of the festival on Saturday the after show party takes place in the ACUD. With the collective Arabstazy founded in Tunis, the festival celebrates the release of the album “Under Frustration”, which presents contemporary electronic sounds from the Arab world, deals with Arab identity and stands for a post-revolutionary futurism. Among them are the Tunisian producer and DJ Deena Abdelwahed , as well as Nuri and mettani & Tropikal Camel . Curated with Torstraße resident, label operator, producer and DJ Daniel Haaksman , the interdisciplinary Brazilian artists * in Cibelle, Jowaa from Accra, and Ghetto Vanessa in experimental club sounds of the southern hemisphere are moving on the second floor of the ACUD Club.

Independent Label Market
Sunday, June 10, 12-18 clock, Volksbühne

On Sunday , the Torstraßenfestival and the London Independent Label Market invite to the foyers of the Volksbühne during the day. There you can find and buy recordings from more than 40 traditional, underground and genrelabels like 4AD, Domino, Erased Tapes, Ninja Tune, Monkeytown as well as many other small labels. Graphic design and pop literature are also included. There is a supporting program with DJ sets, as well as a conversation about a new book about Genesis P-Orridge, a discussion with label makers in cooperation with Music Pool Berlin, as well as artist interviews. Festival co-curator Kevin Halpin : “We are pleased to extend the spectrum of the festival to the ecosystem of the independent music industry and to provide a platform for the many small and large labels.”

For the grand finale, the festival presents a multi-lingual program with two TSF alumni and a dazzling newcomer on the big stage. Itaca , Berlin’s best italo-pop duo, opens the evening, the Polaris Prize winner Lido Pimienta takes over with Afro-Colombian-colored synth pop and TSF’16 secret tip Alex Cameron returns as an international superstar back to the Torstraße, this time with Business partner Roy Molloy on the saxophone.
