Exclusive Mixtape: Dom Zilla

The weekend is here again and we have another fresh mixtape especially created for your ears! Newcastle born Dom Zilla has put together an incredible selection of some of his musical influences including Flying Lotus, Sohn, Jamie XX, Mura Masa, Caribou and many more. After starting to make music in his own bedroom at the early age of 12, Dom went on to make a name for himself on the local hip-hop scene, with his beats being used by the likes of Raekwon, Skinnyman and Fallacy. After a change in musical direction he has now received huge success and critical acclaim producing and co-writing for Black Butter artist Lulu James. Now with a sophomore EP under his belt and global support, Dom is joining the ranks of some of the top electronic music producers to date. His mixtape today is surely only a pinch of what more is to come this year, so hit play and warm up!

Dom Zilla - 2016

Tracklist
You Keep Flooding in – Beccy Owen (Dom Zilla Remix)
I chose this track because it was the first track to really set me off in a new direction, production-wise. I also love the vocal on it and it definitely represents what I look for in music, which is nice melodies, solid beats but with a few left field elements thrown in.

Madlib – Mystic Bounce
I had to include a snippet of this because the album is so incredible. Madlib is a massive influence on what I do so I had to sneak a cheeky sample in there.

Flying Lotus – Do the Astral Plane
Fucking love this track! Fly Lo smashes anything he does, but I thought I’d include something that was a bit dancier, rather than his downtempo or more left field stuff.

Sohn – Lights
Great track from a great producer/artist. This was a tough one, since I love this record. I knew that I had to pick one track off it to add to the mixtape and thought I’d put this on. It has his unique production mixed with his vocal that a lot of people find hard to pull off, but he always does it so effortlessly.

CHVRCHES – Leave a trace (Four Tet Remix)
I haven’t listened to a lot of CHVRCHES to be honest but this remix caught my ear since I dig Four Tet. Great remix and love the build on this record.

Dom Zilla – Tonight (Remix)
I had just finished the mix of the latest E.P and thought I’d remix one of the tracks in a way that was totally different from the original. When I remix, I try to ‘flip’ or make something new from the elements that I’ve been given. This is probably because I came from a Hip-Hop production background and also makes what you do more creative, rather than replaying the same chords with a different sound over the same vocals.

Lulu James – Closer (Dom Zilla Remix)
I wanted to include something that I’d produced for the project before this, to show where it started for me. This was from a Lulu James track called ‘Closer’, which I remixed while working and touring with her.

See Saw – Jamie XX (Four Tet Remix)
I wanted to include some Jamie XX since I love what he does. I figured that it may be a bit tired to include some of his last album, since it’s been pretty much played to death since it came out, so I opted for this great Four Tet remix.

Caribou – Our Love
Again, with Caribou I wanted to include some of his stuff and went for maybe a more obvious choice, but a good one. The production is great on this track….sounds really nostalgic and that bass is killer!

Mura Masa – Bae
This track is unreal!! Really intelligent dance music and the production is slick as fuck. Mura Masa is a genius!

Ajimal – Nothing Touches Me (Dom Zilla Remix)
Another remix from me…haha! I included this as a sort of bookend to the mix which started with the Beccy Owen track. Love Ajimal’s vocals on this and the way it builds to the end.

Favourite current tracks
James Blake – I Need a Forest Fire (featuring Bon Iver)
James Blake and Justin Vernon and Rick Rubin!!….need I say more. Lush music, great groove and vocals are insane! Album of the year for me so far, too.

The Invisible – So Well
I love The Invisible and this track pretty much sums up why. The intelligence in their music, their grooves and melodic arrangements are incredible. You can tell that they always think about what they’re going to do without being contrived. Nice feature with Jessie Ware too, who I’m also a big fan of.

Chance the Rapper – How Great (featuring Jay Electronica)
I hadn’t heard much Chance until Kanye’s TLOP to be honest. My friends always told me to check him out and I’m not sure why I didn’t after hearing this. I was hooked from the start with the gospel chords and simple (but effective) beat, but then Chance comes in and smashes it and then Jay Electronica destroys it….Hip-Hop doesn’t get better than this!
