We love Helga Aniorte’s Illustrations. It’s fun, mystic, and so well done. Her work is filled with Ufos, vampires, skulls… It’s queer, bizarre and so lovable.
KALTBLUT: Hi Helga, can you tell us a little bit about yourself, how did you become an illustrator?
Helga: Well I always liked drawing but the true is that when I studied Art in the University I was more interested of cinema, video art or graphic design. At that time drawing was more like a hobby. Probably to focus on drawing for the last years was maybe by accident or just about time.
KALTBLUT: As a lot of your projects are on big scale, why did you decide you wanted to work on such large formats?
Helga: My works are mostly medium scale on paper. I just did two large scale works and I must say that I love it.
KALTBLUT: You were born in Valencia and are currently based in London, did this change of environment influence your work?
Helga: Every single thing may influence your work. That’s the good thing. When that happens, you cannot stop it. Since the city where you are living, movies, people you know, things you like, the materials you use… even the size of your markers will change the way you draw.
KALTBLUT: What do you like most about drawing?
Helga: Drawing is a really kind and comfortable medium. You don’t really need a big studio to do it, you can do it everywhere, all you need is paper and a marker. so that let you more space and time for thinking about creativity, I guess.
KALTBLUT: You also teach drawing, what is the most important thing you can teach your students?
Helga: I used to teach drawing when I was in Spain. The most important thing to teach is that drawing is not important. It is just an excuse to develop your creativity, what is the important thing.
KALTBLUT: You work with paper and black ink and refrain from using any digital device, correct? It must be a very long process of finishing one project. Can you tell us a little bit about your working process?
Helga: Yes that is correct. I don’t use any digital device. I must say that there isn’t a previous plan in the process. I like improvise. I usually have some pictures in mind and then it’s just about starting in one point and let it go.
KALTBLUT: Can you tell us something about the themes you choose in your illustrations?
Helga: I use almost everything. I specially like Sci-fi, comics, gothic art…
KALTBLUT: What are you working on at the moment?
Helga: Now I think it’s time to add some color to my drawings. That’s the next step.
