Nan Goldin vs. David LaChapelle – Open Air Cinema

Berlin! Next Friday, the 28th of July 2017, two of the most distinctive and prominent photographers of the 21st century come together in a unique double-bill film event featuring two rare and acclaimed documentaries about Nan Goldin and David LaChapelle at the Berliner Union Film Studio.

DOCUMENTARY #1
Nan Goldin – I Remember Your Face’
62 mins, with subtitles EN/ DE – directed by Sabine Lidl, produced by Irene Höfer
“My photos originate from relations, not from observations.” – Nan Goldin
Nan Goldin is known as one of the most important contemporary photographers. Her work provokes, excites and shocks. The subjects of her photographs are most often sex, drugs and violence and therefore also linked to death. In this film, Goldin grants a very personal insight into her life; she behaves as ruthlessly candid as she does with her subjects, with a disarming humor. The result is a unique and very personal work.
To live up to Nan Goldin and her radical and poetic life, the filmmaker Sabine Lidl accompanied the artist alone with the camera. The pivot is Berlin, because that is where she lived for three years in the 1990s.
DOCUMENTARY #2
‘Eye Candy – The Crazy World of David LaChapelle’
52 mins, EN – directed by Hilka Sinning, produced by Irene Höfer
“If you want reality, take the bus.” – David LaChapelle
Women are squashed by giant hamburgers, half-swallowed by sharks or swing from crystal chandeliers: welcome to David LaChapelle’s world! He loves the extreme in photography and life. The photograph illustrates what he experiences: America’s everyday insanity – totally ordinary surrealism. Only at first glance does LaChapelle remain on the surface of things. At second glance his photos are often more “evil”, full of ironic breaks, references to fringe groups and excesses of modern lifestyle.
LaChapelle wants to take hold of a brutally commercialised and profoundly pornographic world. And stars like Elton John, Pamela Anderson or Justin Timberlake are willing to submit to the wild versions of this Pop-Artist. In New York, roads are closed when his gallery opens a new exhibition. In Italy, he is taken as the “Fellini of Photography”.
