One night in Berlin with Santigold!

SANTIGOLD LIVE IS PURE HEAVEN.

I went to the Santigold concert in Berlin a couple of days ago and seriously it was just great. Read below my concert review, and check out her tour dates for 2012. It was at the Astra club and I honestly love this venue because even if the concert you’re attending is sold out ( like it was ) you still have room to dance and you’re not packed like animals or eggs, as you wish.

ANYWAY, I did have lots of room to shake ma booty, maybe because I was in the f***ing front row! Yes here I was, like 2 meters from the stage : Überkrass.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find any video of her concert, but here you can watch her new music video : “The Keepers”.

So basically, she did totally own the stage. Santigold, her band, and her two marvelous dancer-girls. She is singing live the whole time, and also dancing with such ease, it’s impressive. When she started to sing the first song, I caught myself wondering whether it was live or playback, but then I realized that she was singing (nope, she did NOT pull a Britney Spears on us, thank God). The thing that made me doubt is the fact that they seemed to add a lot of sound effects to her voice. So once I understood this, everything was fine.

The atmosphere is some kind of african-egyptian-dream , it’s simple and yet at the same time very efficient. Her costumes fit her so well, It is very hard to put this into words, because it was so different from what I had seen so far. Santigold basically looks like the girl next door, that sweet girl you always wanted to talk to or to be friends with. To make it simple at some point during the show I just said to my friend who was with me : “I just want to hug her”. They didn’t overdo the make-up, no over-the-top set design either. Everything was just as it should be.

Santigold is very communicative with the crowd, and often strikes a conversation with us. Which is nice because not every artist does that. Most just do their thing and out they go… she is different. Obviously outgoing and, yes, nice. She created a real connection with her audience. Our eyes met 6 times in total, 6 wonderful (short, but still) one-on-one moments when we smiled at each other. I totally counted them, because I was in the front row, you know.

Now back to talking about the show itself, we have to give Santigold’s two dancers an Oscar for best performance : they were HUH-MAAAAAAAAAZE-BALLS! Try and picture this : the 2 girls are dancing non-stop during the whole duration of the show but nothing J-Lo-style choreography, but something beautiful, really tribal, really primitive, and of course you can totally refer to afro beats here, but not only. They were really into it, also putting up a little show to warm up the audience when Santigold needed to change outfits or something..If you’ve seen the video “BIG MOUTH”, those are the girls. Think same dancing style for the whole show, and there you have it. I danced like CRAZY during the whole show, and you know, when you are as tall as I am (1m92) and you are on the front row, you’re bound to get noticed, so we did have our “little moment”, until she started to invite some audience members to come on stage with her to dance on “Creator”, and GUESS WHAT?! ok , she picked me up ( hehe, picked me up, picked me up). YAY! Fame here I come, well in fact not really, like there were so many people on the stage that i ended up in the back, moon walking in front of the drummer , needless to say, nobody noticed it, BUT STILL i was THERE, on stage WITH Santigold, for “Creator” : G.R.E.A.T. feeling, I’m telling you.

N.B : I know that when you are 1m92, everybody looks small to you , but let me tell you this: Santigold is really tiny… it’s totally über-CUTE <3

SO here are my finals words: if you’re still wondering if you should attend one of the gigs on her Master of My Make Believe tour, I say stop wondering and GO, and get ready to sweat. The track list is awesome, AND she totally came back for an encore. Ho and Thanks Berlin, the crowd was super cool (not like errr you know, the usual Berlin crowd, comatose, asleep and stuff…).

Anyway, everybody knows that blacks do it better… I do it better *wink*
