Sound of the Week: Ménage à trois

Ménage à trois are Jonathan Flanders, Joseph Manning and Craig Langton. 3 oceanic-pop preachers who found each other at a karaoke dive bar in Manchester. Since then the band have toured Buenos Aires with Molly Nilsson, and performed live in beautiful boutique locations across Europe including Paris, Berlin, Belgium and more. Australia III is their debut album and the third and final part of a trilogy which included two previously released EP’s entitled Australia I & II on Parisian tastemaker label Cracki Records (home to Los Porcos, Agar Agar).

Collectively based in their spiritual home of Manchester but each from different corners of the world, Australia III was recorded and mixed between Manchester & Saint-Denis-le-Ferment featuring 10 tracks, which include the summer hit “South Seas”. Ménage à trois describe these songs as “a collection of feelings, coming from experiences in love, learning and getting over shit”.

“Sunrise on Bondi beach, all alone & jet lagged, I can’t fight the sunlight on the other side of the world. Missing you when you’re gone. These songs aren’t meant for anyone but you. As long as you are happy, tell me what to say, like the time in the rain he got away.” – Ménage à trois.

Australia III is Ménage à trois’s best work to date. Significantly different but in the same spirit as one of their first self-produced cassettes entitled Pride, which was recorded in their bedrooms. Australia III is a huge production expertly mixed by Alain at Studio 33, allowing the band to feel and experience the emotion and the power in the music. From Jonathan’s transcendental vocals to the instrumentation created by Joseph and Craig, the listener is taken on a journey of love and heartbreak from Europe to South America to Australia and back again. A day in the life of Australia. This is your life. Love is stronger than pride.
