“Let me tell you a little bit about the obvious chair presence in our series and whats behind it. The chair, to me, is something which has quite a strong symbolic value. Its all about sitting on this chair, not just for a little while but sitting there and staying there. Second after second, minute after minute. Every second of every day. There are so many impressions coming our way, so many emotions linked to those impressions we deal with. The longer we sit, the bigger those internalized feelings become and the more difficult it becomes to communicate them. Sitting on a chair is about the impossibility to communicate what’s happening inside of us. It’s about a very strong and passionate inner-self confronted with the impossibility of doing anything with it or communicating it to others. This conflict is to me omnipresent within the relation between a human being and the utterly basic object called “a chair”. Immobility not only of the body but also symbolizing the disruption between oneself and the other. Some time ago I did a series of portraits with different people each on a different chair in the same beautiful daylight filtered through a diffuse glass window. Confronting them with this idea and then seeing what was coming out in means of expression.

Now, within the fashionshoot we are presenting here, we took this basic idea a step further. The chair, no longer being a foreign object disconnected from ourselves that we can use to how it pleases us. The chair has somehow become part of the body itself. It has become a presence with a definite weight, weighing on oneself, being there and staying there, bound to the body. The wonderful Julie Vanelderen (Atelier Covered) has taken this idea and added a very strong element of nature overflowing human reality. Symbolizing the immobility of humanity, its resignation, and translating it into a beautifully handcrafted and customized ensemble that adds an overgrowing nature into the complete.” says Lieven Gouwy
