May I introduce you to Netherlands born artist Dennis Vanderbroeck and his work “THIS SELFIE SHOULD JUSTIFY MY EXISTENCE”?! Dennis Vanderbroeck now based in London, he will graduate this year as a master in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.
Dennis says about his project:” This summer, when I was short listed for the prestigious Performance Act Award in Italy, I created my most recent piece “THIS SELFIE SHOULD JUSTIFY MY EXISTENCE”. A piece about how, nowadays, we shape and create our ideal identity on social media and how we constantly trying to generate proof of the fact that we exist, fighting for out right to exist. A piece about “branding” myself as an artist but also as an individual.
For this piece I created the “DENNIS” sweatshirt series, a series of jumpers with the letters of my name printed on them. After the performance people had the possibility to buy a D jumper, with buying a D jumper i ask the person to take a selfie with it. All of these selfie’s are collected on one of the longest selfie-chains in the world.”
This project is so successful that the fashion world starts to copy it. Giorgio Armani did the same thing. His models were wearing exactly the same blue jumpers with exactle the same white letter, printed with “mr. A”. In order to generate and proof the fact that Armani still exists? A clever way of “branding”? Or simply a reference to his work? Whatever the reason is, we do like Dennis work much more.
