In the feature-length film Symphony of Now, a range of urban panoramas, personal ciphers and nighttime stories unfold under the guidance of director Johannes Schaff. Berlin moments are crystalized into fragments for a kaleidoscope of nighttime Berlin, creating a cinematic tribute to this moment of the metropolis. Its aural backbone is provided by a score curated by Innervisions’ Frank Wiedemann, with kindred Berlin musicians spanning several eras: Samon Kawamura, Alex.Do, Gudrun Gut, Thomas Fehlmann, Modeselektor and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Johannes Schaff

Winning Best Documentary Feature at the latest Manchester Film Festival and Best Documentary at the European Independent Film Award 2017 for »Das Wassup«, Johannes Schaff is gradually gaining a reputation as something of a moviemaking Renaissance man. Originally from Munich and currently based in London, the prolific cosmopolite has followed his work to locales such as Miami and Brazil, to recently return to Berlin. Based on a body of work spanning documentary, music video and narrative film, as well as cinematography, writing, directing, funding and producing, Schaff is steadily forging ahead, with »Symphony of Now« his most recent stroke of mastery. The artist has the rare talent to combine a keen eye with a contemporary attitude for poetic non-fiction in film. He captivates his audience by showing raw, authentic people and talents without being scared to scandalize or polarize, which is one of Schaff’s distinctive traits. Whether music videos, documentaries, narrative films or opera, Johannes Schaff’s works speak with a distinct voice. They (e. g. »Pirate Golf«, 2010, »The Hunt«, 2008, »Das Wassup«, 2016) are clever, provocative and challenge viewers to question the surreal and fake beauty of today’s society, and to look beyond it

A cinematic love letter to Berlin’s underground by night. Different artists gather to declare love to their city and our time. A vision of two filmmakers and renowned musicians from the electronic music scene. A 60-minute piece in the memory of now

The film is divided into 5 acts and set to music by artists such as FRANK WIEDEMANN, SAMON KAWAMURA, ALEX.DO, GUDRUN GOOD, THOMAS FEHLMANN, MODESELEKTOR and HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS.

#1 Chilly Gonzales x Boys Noize x Teufelsberg

Under the radar – two music legends in a mythical space for a stealth performance. Decades after its active use ended, the old Teufelsberg spy station remains one of the most mysterious places, harking back to times past. This exceptional setting was the stage for a clandestine performance by Chilly Gonzales and Boys Noize, flanked by the Kaiser Quartett and Stella Le Page.

#2 Black Mountain

With the short film Black Mountain, Berlin-based artist collective Like a Wild Beast’s Fur, composer Moritz von Oswald and culture and communication consultant Jan Engel lead us through a unique and novel interpretation of Richard Wagner’s Parsifal. The exclusive premiere at Galerie Patrick Ebensperger was presented by and with the acclaimed artists and actors from Berlin’s club scene, like Nina Kraviz or Peaches, and Tómas Lemarquis.

And now: #3 Symphony of Now
