Video Premiere: Atalein – ‘Autumn / Winter’

Queensland born, Melbourne-based producer Atalein makes her startling debut with the powerful ‘Autumn / Winter’. Teaming up with director Rob La Terra, the personal piece is visually brought to life as he explains, “Autumn & Winter. These seasons in literary symbolism provide a landscape for painful messages, as well as messages of renewal, rebirth and hope. The clip is as much a lucid journey through these seasons of oppression and self-discovery as it is a shedding of one’s own skin, both figuratively and literally.” ‘Autumn / Winter’ is one of many tracks Atalein wrote inspired by her trip to Europe last year. Co-produced and mixed by Becki Whitton and mastered by Joe Lambert, the song explores brutalist textures and beats intertwined of light and almost fragile vocals.

The release of ‘Autumn / Winter’ comes just as Atalein is preparing to head to Berlin to spend a few months writing and working on her music more.

“I wrote the song Autumn / Winter after my travels to Europe last year. I drew on the sounds and production styles I heard and learnt while over there. I really like industrial sounds and textures and how the juxtaposition of my high vocals fit within it. I find it very raw. I wouldn’t call myself a lyrical genius and so it’s important to me that my music and the soundscape of it helps to create emotions and imagery.

The song itself is drawn on from past relationships with family and partners. I had just gone through a breakup and I was sitting on a hill at the time and wrote the lyrics Autumn / Winter before I had even written the song.

When it came to doing the video I told Rob a bit of what had been going on in my life as well as past things. When I was a teenager I was in a really toxic relationship that became quite abusive and it took me a while to break the cycle of abuse. It got to the point where police were involved and I knew I needed to get out and that’s a little bit of what the video captures. Just knowing that whether it’s expectations that you put on yourself or your family and friends put on you, you can get out and it will still be ok.

At the end of the day you have to be true to yourself and it took me a while to realise that you don’t need to please everyone and that no matter how shitty a situation is you can always find a way out!”

Atalein is the project of Queensland born, Melbourne based producer Laura Hopkins. The freedom to break rules drew Laura to electronic music after many years of classical piano training. After RKDA all went their separate ways Laura took time off not only to develop her sound and skills as a producer but to also discover herself more as a person and artists. It’s been two years since Laura properly released any music and she is now ready to share her project Atalien with the world.

“Playing in a band was amazing. I love the collaborative processes, however, I just found that I didn’t really know who I was as a music artist. I’d played music for so long in a more classical sense, however, I was still so new to songwriting and production process of music. I wanted to take time away to discover who I was as an artist and it’s taken me a while to be ready to share what I’ve produced; I wanted it to be right and represent who I am as a person and artist. I just wanted to be really proud of what I was putting out, regardless of what other people thought.”
