Artist Of The Week: Dawid Tomaszewski – Retrospective 2000 – 2015

A KALTBLUT exclusive editorial and interview with the established german-polish fashion designer Dawid Tomaszewski. Dawid Tomaszewski celebrates it’s 5th anniversary and presented his 10th collection to a selected audience during Berlin Fashion Week in January.  He describes his fashion as “New Couture” and puts his focus on high quality materials and precious details. A great reason for KALTBLUT to meet the Berlin based designer for a short interview, who has cultured his love for art and aesthetics.

Together with the photographer duo Lucio Aru & Franco Erre, the stylist Anita Krizanovic created an editorial with a dramatic look for which she used selected styles from all ten collections. If you are not in love yet please fall in love now with Dawid Tomaszewski.

Name: Dawid Tomaszewski  // Country: Germany  // Label: Studio Tomaszewski // Founded in: 2009

KALTBLUT: Dear Dawid, please tell us something about you?  Who you are, what you do, where you live and work?

Dawid: I’m Dawid Tomaszewski, a fashion designer based in Berlin. The city really inspires me. On one hand I love it’s urbanity and on the other hand I enjoy the beautiful nature which is just a couple of kilometers away from my studio in Charlottenburg. Oh, and another thing I really appreciate the artistic freedom I have here in Berlin.

KALTBLUT: If you had not become a fashion designer, what would have become of you?

Dawid: Mhh… that’s a really good question. Maybe I would have become an art collector or an architect? I love creative and beautiful things!

KALTBLUT: How did you become a fashion designer? And was that something you always wanted to be?

Dawid: No, it was rather a process than something I’ve always wanted to be. I’ve tried different directions and studied art history and fashion design in London, Berlin and Warsaw.

KALTBLUT: Do you remember your first designed piece?

Dawid: No, not really… I’ve just designed my whole life!

KALTBLUT: In January you have presented your 10th collection at Berlin Fashion Week. Is this a reason for you to summarize? Have you reached your goals that you`ve put 5 years ago and where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Dawid: Yes, my 10th collection was a point where I remembered how I started my brand here in Berlin. I hope that my brand keeps growing and that the fashion industry in Germany changes. It’s so great being a part of this!

KALTBLUT: What do you think of fashion in Berlin and why did you choose Berlin for your label?

Dawid: Fashion in Berlin is really creative and diverse. We have some really nice brands and it’s still growing. 16 years ago I came to Berlin and fell immediately in love with the city! Berlin is my stage and I always wanted to help making it an equivalent to New York, London and Paris, in terms of fashion. For fashion, Berlin is a world-class destination, even though it speaks a new language. To learn that language, you have to give people some time.

KALTBLUT: Until now, there was no official support for designers in Berlin. With the announcement of the German Fashion Council during the last edition of the Berlin Fashion Week hopefully things will change. What has been missing, what would you wish for and how do you see the future for designers in Germany?

Dawid: The German Fashion Council is one of the most important things happening in Germany right now. Germany identifies itself more with fashion. In my opinion there was a place missing which focus also on high-end fashion design and I’m so happy that we’ve finally got this now. In future I hope for more development, both in a national and in an international way.

KALTBLUT: What can we expect from you in the future?

Dawid: I hope my brand will grow and that we will change with every year, surprise ourselves and become better and better!
