Some things are gone quicker than you would think: The fresh rolls at the bakery, the football behind the backyard wall or the Early-Bird-Tickets for the By the Lake Festival. The regular ticket sale is on! Aaand……We can finally tell you which 4 acts will be on stage at Strandbad Weißensee in Berlin on August 4th; The incredible Ata Kak, faUSt, Imarhan and A Hawk and a Hacksaw.
A varied selection, that (typical for By the Lake) spans across music generations, genres and continents. But we don’t rest on our old oars, faUSt for example will perform their newest piece of their 48 year band history for the first time ever in Berlin and feature very special guests.
“Once again we will have amazing food and drinks, a sandy beach, paddle boats, the scenic lake, our own festival radio station and some surprise performances on site – well, simply the full By the Lake experience!”
Pure joy, relentless energy ,and hit-tunes! That’s what you can expect when Ata Kak comes on stage, hyped electronics / rap / funk / highlife icon Yaw Atta-Owusu from Ghana. Gossip has it that Yaw is a late bloomer, but the truth is that he released his album “Obaa Sima” already in 1994 on cassette. Eight years later, it was a coincidence that music enthusiast Brian Shimkovitz came across a tape on a journey through Ghana. Then, in 2015 with a bit of delay, Shimkovitz re-released the album internationally on his Awesome Tapes from Africa. Summing up with Yaw’s words, “If we all love each other, we can make the world a better place”. Let’s challenge him on that on August 4 at By the Lake.
faUSt is: a musical magma with Werner „Zappi“ Diermaier and Jean-Hervé „jhp/art-Errorist“ Péron.
faUSt at By the Lake Festival 2018 is also: Schneider TM and a children’s choir.
faUSt has: no aim, no rules.
faUSt says: “Droit devant!”
faUSt eats: matie de bonne femme and chocolate tarte with lots of whipped cream (twice, please).
faUSt promises: “Lend us your ears, we will give you our hearts.
With the release of their debut album in 2016, Imarhan iniated a the “New Wave of Tuareg Music”, a tender, soulful, intense vision of a musical movement that was already flooded with talent and exposure. Their 2018 follow-up “Temet”, lives up to it through additions of funk, fuzz, disco, and rock – an eclectic mix, just after our fancy over here at By the Lake. “Temet” in Tamashek means “connections”. It’s an vigorous wake-up call for unity, reminding people that we are all are connected and that only through the acceptance and uptake of this union will we be able to overcome the separation of cultures and societies.
A Hawk and a Hacksaw
Since 2004, the idea of traveling to find music and inspiration, and the belief in the power of music to cross and unite borders have always been at the core of A Hawk and a Hacksaw’s music. Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost love to anticipate and observe connections between places and epochs from a bird’s eye view. Their current album “Forest Bathing” (Leaf Label, 2018) reflects on the Japanese art of healing named “Shinrin-Yoku”, in which one takes on the forest atmosphere and lets his soul bathe in it. If you listen to “Forest Bathing” without knowing who the musicians are, you probably would not expect two American musicians from Albuquerque, New Mexico behind it. At By the Lake, A Hawk and a Hacksaw present music from different locations along a route without a destination, along many dreams to come true.
