Official about: Berlin Alternative Fashion Week is a platform showcasing the rise of alternative concepts in fashion. With a week-long programme of shows and marketplaces, it aims to promote influential, genre-breaking innovators and connect them with established contemporaries in the fields of fashion, music and art, in a context that isn’t constrained or dominated by big brands and labels. It is a fashion week that celebrates non-conformity and one which challenges gender roles and restrictive attitudes, in order to give everyone the freedom to choose what they want to wear and to explore new identities and possibilities.
We believe that fashion should be inclusive, rather than exclusive, and that’s exactly what our fashion week proposes; our shows, talks and market spaces will give everyone the opportunity to encounter new and independent designers, explore ethical and sustainable ways of buying and sourcing materials, and discover innovative approaches to styling.I have experienced first-hand the terrible impact that mass-produced fashion is having on our environment and on some of the most marginalised communities in the world. Landfill sites are filling up fast and the increasing demand for cheaper clothing is forcing people, and often children, in countries such as Bangladesh and India, into labour for negligible wages. We believe in buying well-made garments from conscious designers who use ethically-sourced materials. Not only will this bring a new sense of freedom and individuality to our increasingly homogenised style, but it will also kick start a revolution towards a more socially and environmentally conscious fashion production.
The designers we are working with have real vision, striving to design clothes that are exciting, innovative, sustainable and affordable, and that celebrate colour and vitality. Our main show, ‘Alchemy,’ will be the melting pot of this creativity, offering new designers the chance to develop their ideas into something truly sublime in an nonrestrictive atmosphere. Over recent years, Berlin has gained the reputation as a city that nurtures and supports free-spirited, alternative thinking, which has made it a hub for pioneering cutting-edge design. We plan to deliver a unique fashion show that will be the first of its kind in Berlin, as well as an online platform showcasing interviews, editorials, and fashion shoots from exciting emerging talents. We’ll also have pop up club nights around Berlin working with our media partners to bring you some amazing music to get you dancing during the long summer nights.” By Adam Rose The Founder
