Berlin! Gothic – An exhibition by Erling Viktor

#SaveTheDate – Gallery P6 presents Gothic – An exhibition by Erling Viktor. Opening party: 05.02.2022, 17.00 till 21.00 PM. Exhibition: 5 February till 31 March 2022. One could say that the human emotion of awe is transcendent and even mystical in its way. It conveys a perceived sense of vastness but at the same time: belonging.

Erling Viktor is an artist who utilizes his emotions while seeking a form of transcendence in the process of creating his work. This is precisely the reason why the artist was drawn to the awe-inducing power of Gothic architecture. Viktor’s paintings for the exhibition Gothic at Galerie P6 are a testament to his admiration for the divine.

The name ‘Gothic’ was infamously given to this style of architecture as it was described as confused and dark, barbaric, crude and tasteless since it did not conform to classical Roman ideals. This term was used in reference to the behaviour of the original Germanic Goths (for sacking Rome in the 4th Century) but has little to do with the actual architecture.

On the contrary, Gothic-style architecture commands attention. Its ribbed vaults, pointed arches and flying buttresses are meant to convey an epic sense of grandeur so high up that one feels incredibly small and spellbound by its glory. Perhaps the most breathtaking is an extensive breaking through of the outer wall surfaces by windows. Light falls into the sanctuary and floods the corridors, creating an environment celebrating its mystery and sacred nature.

Viktor was introduced to the Gothic Domes of Ulm and Strasbourg- both tremendous in their size and importance in European architecture- by an old German friend and was just simply amazed upon seeing them. ‘My mind got blown in a memory of light and darkness as I know from the big forests of my childhood in the countryside of Denmark where we got lost in the darkness of the woods but finding our way out again because of points of light.

These tremendous buildings simply just remind me of a big wild nature where you must navigate to find the way. Therefore I paint them now. It is just my tribute to and love of nature and craft’.

Just like these cathedrals, Erling Viktor’s paintings of them capture attention and induce a sense of awe in the viewer with their playful mastery of light and perspective. His exhibition Gothic is a supreme ode ‘to nature and craft in a fascinating and materialistic union of dream and reality.

His subjects are ‘proud – standing there forever like a 900-year-old Oak tree – silent and beautiful as a hero’.
