Last season, Bobby Abley transported us to the magical and wonderful world of OZ. For AW20, Abley has swapped out the yellow brick road for the yellow 3D animated kings of mischief known simply as the Minions. The perfect tongue in cheek collaborator for a designer who knows how to effortlessly inject some serious fun into his flavoursome collections, complete with iconic cartoon culture. Written by Lewis Robert Cameron

Highlights include expressive Minion bespoke prints including an Argyle silk design, denim printed with an op-art Mionons graphic and a neoprene Minions camouflage. Key shapes are the Abley staples with extra short and extra long kimono-inspired robes, oversized (and oversleeved) sweatshirts and tees with the proportions of Minons versus humans. Plus the odd dungaree and boiler suit thrown in to tick that all important workwear box. /

Of course no Bobby Abley show would be complete without an homage to the iconic and historic Xtina aka Christina Aguilera as Bobby loves to serve us some Dirrrrty/Bionic nods in one or two looks every season. This time arriving off the back of Abley’s collab with the pop superstar for her recent European Tour ‘Liberation’. P.s The preshow music was basically Xtina on repeat. We lived for it.

The show was dedicated to Abley’s late grandmother Madge, who sadly passed away at the age of 91 in the run up to the show. Paying tribute to her by incorporating pieces from her wardrobe styled into the show, including pearls from one of her necklaces reworked for the catwalk as well as her favourite handbag with a catwalk customisation.

Abley’s AW20 collection also referenced a trip to 1970s California, drawing on the area’s vibrant subcultures, follwing the idea of a series of villain’s hang-outs- the mechanics’ garage, the Chinese restaurant, the martial arts club etc.

Bobby Abley X Minions Diffusion line debuts exclusively at selected Primark stores on February 19th.
