Calvin Blackburn is an up-and-coming Scottish designer whose philosophy is firmly rooted in seasonless slow fashion. His work examines the ways in which storytelling, heritage and timeless craftsmanship can be harmoniously combined to offer a luxury product imbued with emotion. @calvin_blackburn
Calvin Blackburn’s worldview draws reference from tradition and history, creating fluid, voluminous silhouettes that adapt to the body instead of constraining it. His debut collection, titled ‘The Dreaming’ conjures a poetic vision of folkloric mysticism. Featuring thoughtfully layered garments inspired by nomadic dress codes found across multiple cultural origins.
Calvin’s work examines the space between the body and garment, with enveloping shapes akin to a blanket in which we would drape ourselves. Each garment was mindfully created to provide feelings of comfort in the wearer, using traditional flat pattern-making techniques (akin to kilt or kimono making) which eliminate as many seams as possible. Proposing an experience of spiritual softness that can only be felt when worn.
With a signature design ethos of understated elegance, Calvin Blackburn’s work attracted various high profile collaborators, such as Harris Tweed and Johnstons of Elgin, of which their fabrics were generously donated for use within his debut collection.
