A KALTBLUT exclusive. “Close observation’ explores central ideas around the act of looking. We live in a time where surveillance is pervasive across multiple platforms, new technologies and environments. We watch ourselves and others intensely. Focussing on digital CCTV surveillance, the project captures and intrudes on moments. Empty streets and houses are used as the backdrop to the action, catching the subjects off guard. Utilising documentary footage harvested via accessing surveillance cameras all over the country, the domestic space takes on new unnerving meaning and outside localities become a canvas for expression.” Designers are Grete Henriette Moeller and Stephanie Francis- Shanahan.
Specific vantage points, camera angles, cropping and sequencing strategies, force the viewer to be part of this action. Inviting us in and also to take a step back and reflect on ourselves and the current social climate and ethics around ‘looking’. Consequently, the performative relationship of voyeur and performer situates surveillance within new 21st century social and political systems, acting as points of disruption. New digital communication platforms have given us the unbridled opportunity to watch and be watched. To be closely observed or viewed from afar. The only question that remains is- do you know who’s watching you?
“I am a kind, caring and thoughtful creative with an experimental and sensitive approach to my work. Using my visual eye for composition and image-making to communicate my ideas.
