Fashion Film: Miu Miu – Subjective Reality

Miu Miu released for the Fall Winter 2015 season a short film by Steven Meisel featuring actresses Maddison Brown, Hailey Gates, Mia Goth, and Stacy Martin. Set entirely on the gritty streets of New York City, the film continues the casual, improvisational, highly-subjective exploration, initiated in the still photography. Keeping the camera low and close, the actresses are depicted as urban passersby from oblique angles, around corners, through car windows and bus shelters, lending an intimate, almost clandestine, atmosphere.

The juxtaposition of the vibrant colors and textures of the clothing against the bleached, monochrome of the city street suggests a displaced, slightly-voyeuristic, mystery, a mood underscored by the low, laid back, rhythmic music by Saunder Jurriaans and Daniel Bensi. There is the suggestion of a narrative – the actresses exchange veiled glances, a whispered comment is shared, background characters intrude, a handbag is surreptitiously exchanged – but the reading is open, left to the viewer to parse. The real story is distinct tone and the evocation of a certain sensation; at once familiar and, at the same time, wholly new.
