How would you dress in the After Life? This is the question 8ON8 designer Li Gong asks, his answer? In the finest of silks of course! Exploring the idea of self-liberation in his first catwalk on an international scale for GQ CHINA PRESENTS, displaying youthful maturity with a simplistic nod to the retro-futurism found in his graduate collection back in 2017.
Entitled ‘San Junipero’, named after a popular episode from Brit Sci-Fi hit Black Mirror, the collection is both sweet and imaginative, blending youthful experimental style alongside traditional menswear tailoring by combining 8ON8s signature boxy tailored silhouette with intriguing style staple combos. Gong uses menswear as a base to highlight the feminine aspects in today’s modern youth, PJ co-ords, chain mail vests, silk trenches and even going so far to attach nightgowns to shirts as models walked valiantly.
The prints for SS20 are taken from 80s graffiti featuring washed and worn effects on the jersey to reference underground club cultures, fusing street elements into modern luxurious menswear via the detailed finish on couture fabrics. A new wave of classic menswear.
The footwear, Reel Lace-Up Derby’s provided by untitled, represented the mature energy of the young generation through bold geometric heels experimenting with formality and athleticism. Gong even took to the catwalk himself at the end of the show, wedged between two models to thunderous applause for a well-deserved victory lap. We could get used to this new wave of classic menswear.
