Marienbad am Meer, Nina Röder’s second solo show at galerie burster Berlin

galerie burster Berlin is pleased to present Marienbad am Meer, Nina Röder’s second solo show. The exhibition is part of the EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography. Nina Röder’s ancestors were Sudeten Germans who were expelled from the Czech town of Marienbad in the aftermath of World War II.

Prior to that time, her great-grandfather Josef Behr had worked as a concierge at the Bayrischer Hof Hotel. Since 2018, the photographer has travelled to the spa town with her family on a regular basis and spent time in that very hotel. Röder’s photographs are stylized images of nostalgic longing; Marienbad and its neo-kitsch aesthetics frame the setting for a game of absurd identities.

As part of the orchestrated light-heartedness and innocuousness of the location, images with erotic connotations can be seen alongside the motives of Röder’s mother featuring fictitious or constructed elements. As a sensitive observer of her environment, to whom reflected conceptions and technical perfection are important, Nina Röder’s series Marienbad am Meer builds on earlier works about her own family narratives and continues her investigation into the alienation of modern individuals from their natural prerequisites and social circumstances as well as its counterpart: the longing for home and security.

Nina Röder (b. 1983 in Neuendettelsau, Germany) lives and works in Berlin and Hamburg. She studied Media Art and Design from 2006 – 2009 with a focus on photography at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. Since 2017, she has been a professor of photography at the European University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. In addition to her artistic work, Röder completed a doctorate in the field of artistic research.
