Sygns — the European market leader in neon design and production — is entering the smart home market with their new brand „Kiën“. LICHT 1, Kiën’s first product, is taking a big step towards series production after being in development for 2 years. The company unveiled LICHT 1 for the first time to the public eye in September at IFA in Berlin and Design Junction in London. Today, October 18, Kiën launches a campaign on Kickstarter to finance the series production of its product, prepare the market entry and establish the first communication with the prospective customer base.
During the development and production, the team around the two founders, Nils Lehnert and Anthony Genillard, cooperate with manufacturing experts in the areas of 3D printing and laser cutting as well as light experts of Fraunhofer Institut, Technical University Berlin and Technical University Leipzig. The production process takes place exclusively in Germany. Nils Lehnert is convinced that Kickstarter is not only a useful marketing tool, but also a valuable feedback channel to incorporate customer wishes directly into the product development: “Kickstarter empowers creators and gives customers a strong voice. With ‚LICHT 1’, we are trying to disrupt the current state of smart light. We set out to produce a functional and healthy work light for customers that have an affinity for technology and a
feel for design.”
By relying on category-leading LEDs with Color-Rendering-Index (CRI) values above 90, LICHT 1 is able to emulate the natural spectrum of daylight (between 2700 and 5000 Kelvin). According to studies, emulated daylight has a positive influence on health as well as productivity and leads to a higher standard of living long-term.
LICHT 1 comes in a selection of premium processed materials: custommade powder coated aluminum, raw industrial concrete or veneered oak and walnut wood. All components are built-to-order and are available in multiple sizes (60cm/100cm/140cm) to suit the style and requirements of each customer as a modular pendant lamp system. Kiën offers a unique
shopping experience through the integration of 3D rendering and support of VR devices. The light system can be controlled by using a native app that comes for smartphones as well as tablets and will be compatible with other smart home devices in the future. Each lamp is connected to a product database that stores data like power consumption and heat
generation of single LEDs — an optional built-in feature.
That way, Kiën will continuously improve the quality of its products and will be able to
offer maintenance services even before technical issues even arise. Product designer Markus Mai regards crowdfunding as a chance to send out a positive signal to developers of other smart home devices. “Our message is clear: production quality and local manufacturing are still highly valued goods for customers of all product categories.”
