Ticket Giveaway: Ja Ja Ja x Iceland Airwaves: ROKKY, Lydmor + Detalji
Returning from a summer break, the Ja Ja Ja Nordic club nights are back and set to embark upon their 5th anniversary season, kicking off with a September show in collaboration with Iceland Airwaves Festival. Three emerging Nordic artists, ROKKY, Lydmor, and Detalji, have been hand-picked by the Ja Ja Ja and Iceland Airwaves booking teams to not only perform at FluxBau on Thursday 12th September, but also to appear at the 2019 edition of Iceland Airwaves festival in Reykjavik. This collaboration highlights two platforms through which to uncover the best new music from the Nordic region, bringing three emerging acts to the attention of Berlin’s music industry and new music aficionados. Roots in Iceland, raised in England, and a resident of France and Germany, ROKKY distills the very best of European pop and club culture. “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” If ROKKY has a mantra, this is it. “I know what I like and I work hard to create the sounds and beats I love,” says this self-taught musician, producer and nomad currently living in Berlin. ROKKY’s calm, composed exterior belies a driven individual who thrives on challenges. In her teens, she moved to her parents native Iceland, immersing herself in the local music scene. When she discovered Garageband, at age twelve, making her own music became a reality and she discovered that she could realise the beats and sounds she had in her head. She decided to enroll in a sound engineering course – undeterred at being the only female in the class – and threw herself into her newfound passion.
ROKKY spent the rest of her early childhood in Oxford and moved to Berlin in 2013. “Moving to Berlin and going out definitely opened my eyes to a whole new world of techno, dance music and DJs. It’s helped me get deeper into that world. The city has such a freedom to it, it’s allowed me the confidence to make the music I truly love.” she says. Meeting Sofi Tukker at their show in Berlin in 2016 “changed everything for me” says ROKKY. Dancing by the stage, singing every word, ROKKY caught Sophie’s eye and she jumped o# stage to dance with her. After the show, ROKKY leaped at the opportunity to show the Grammy nominated Dance duo around her city. A night at Berghain with the band ended with a promise to stay in touch, and shortly after ROKKY sent them her music. Sophie and Tucker were so impressed they gave her feedback and started collaborating – “I was in complete shock, I couldn’t believe someone else would believe in my songs as much as they did.”
Being a natural linguist – she speaks six languages – allowed for spontaneous moves to France and Germany and its clear that stints in both countries have played their part in her sound. Her love of French electronic music and pop and her embracing of Berlin’s club and techno scene are evident on her new single ‘deux’ released on +1 Records on May 8th, 2019. Written in France and a song about submission, ‘deux’ combines ROKKY’s signature tough dance beats with a sensual French lyric- – “it’s great synth wave sound and a vocal that is so raw and relaxed.”
The Danish girl with the bruised knees jumping down from stage swinging the chord of the microphone like a whip while she sings as much of sex and drugs as emotions and far away places. At times it can seem like the Danish singer Lydmor is everywhere at once. One moment she is standing on the top of a bar in a venue in Sao Paolo singing her heart out while the beat is pumping over her sweaty dancing audience. Next she playfully coproduces a track with J-pop legend Takeshi Kobayashi, or composes a soundtrack for an animated fantasy series. In between her myriad of creative collaborations (including critically acclaimed “Lydmor & Bon Homme”) the young producer and singer has managed to tour most of the world several times, playing from the biggest festivals and venues to at times in the homes, in tiny living rooms, of her biggest fans. The eccentric Scandinavian girl balances always on the tip of a knifes edge between light and dark. Between loving and cold. Order and chaos. If you manage to catch one of her shows, she will flirt, dance, cry, scream and hug her way into your heart with a brutal honesty that comes across both in her pumping rhythmical electro sounds as well as her emotional dreamy side. Multiple media has compared the quirky voice to the likes of Grimes, Kate Bush or Björk but inevitably the comparisons fall short.
Detalji is one of the hottest electronic music producers to emerge from Finland. Her self-released 2018 Sex EP garnered praise from the media as well as support from national radio and took her to perform in some of the hottest clubs and biggest festivals in Finland, paving the way for other female DJ’s and producers. In 2019, she has been shortlisted for Breakthrough of the Year on Finnish national radio, and she won a Femma award (Finnish “indie Grammy”) for best electronic act. Her new Ravenous EP was released on Paris based Left Bank Recordings in February 2019. Detalji will release a vinyl version of the SEX EP this summer followed by new music in October.
