The series, Absolution, delves into the profound journey of releasing ourselves from the weight of the past that holds us back. It reflects our struggle to confront, accept, and ultimately let go of what once defined us but no longer serves us. Only when we surrender to our past can we truly move forward, stepping into a realm of personal peace and transformation, our absolution.
“Through this series, I seek to explore the spectrum of emotions we experience as we navigate this path: the turbulence of unresolved pain, the resistance to letting go, and finally, the liberation that comes with acceptance. Absolution captures the essence of this release, offering a visual representation of what it feels like to achieve true inner freedom.
I began creating Absolution in 2016, starting with two pieces that year. Since then, I continued to add to the series, creating one piece each in 2017 and 2018, two in 2019 and one in 2024. The works from 2024 represent the latest in this ongoing exploration, bringing the themes of release and transcendence into sharper, more resonant focus.”
Kunal Kohli is a narrative photographer from Norway living in New York. His work heavily focuses on themes of self-identity and explores the relationships between people who may be perceived as “different” from one another. With a family background in India, Kunal’s photos often deal with issues of diversity and representation. Kunal’s photography is reflective, often drawing from his observations to create thought-provoking and emotionally resonant pieces.
Kunal also received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. His work has been exhibited in New York, San Francisco, London, Milan, York, Tokyo and Cape Town to name a few. Overall, Kunal Kohli is a talented and thought-provoking artist whose pictures will continue inspiring and engaging audiences for years.
