Reclaiming Power: AKA KELZZ’s ‘WASTE CADET’ Is a Sonic Anthem of Resilience

Iconic Berlin-based singer-songwriter AKA KELZZ makes a powerful return with WASTE CADET. The track is a potent blend of raw lyricism infused with Black queer rage and pulsating Jungle and Drum & Bass rhythms. WASTE CADET stands as a bold reclamation of power and resilience, continuing AKA KELZZ’s dynamic exploration within the electronic music realm. It delves deep into the painful realities of overcoming childhood abuse and the transformative healing journey. The anthem serves as a poignant reminder that we are always enough and that shame is a burden we shouldn’t carry. “I’m slaying dragons now, don’t you see the work?” KELZZ proclaims.

Starting with an intense and heartfelt intro, WASTE CADET invites listeners to embrace reality with a drop that blends the raw energy of Jungle and Drum & Bass, interwoven with spoken word and evocative vocals. Each beat energises and empowers, turning the audience into warriors ready to stand tall and confront their truths.

“Waste Cadet is for baby Kelzz — as an apology for ever thinking I was never enough. I will never forget the ground, because my being is what holds me to it. There is no excuse now.” – AKA KELZZ

This track offers an intimate resolution, infused with influences from powerhouses such as Little Simz, Nia Archives, Sampha, SHY FX, and Goldie. It was produced by longtime collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Rafa Mura, whose partnership with KELZZ continues to push sonic boundaries while defining the unique sound that is AKA KELZZ.

WASTE CADET resonates strongly with young Black and brown queer individuals, and anyone who has traversed the turmoil of an abusive environment or battled systemic oppression. It’s a voice for those who’ve prioritised survival over thriving, challenging silence with bold expression. This track offers a potent alternative: reality, visibility, and the promise of healing.

At its core, WASTE CADET is an act of reclamation. It boldly reclaims the self after years of silence, rejection, and burdensome shame. It’s both an apology and an anthem for the inner child, the self that was taught they were “too much,” “too soft,” or “never enough.” This heartfelt piece embraces the beauty, brilliance, and fire that have always existed within.

It’s a liberating release from guilt and shame, paving the way for the joy of resistance. This is Black queer Jungle and Drum & Bass as vehicles of survival, delivering music that ignites the heart and soul. WASTE CADET challenges us to stop running, confront our demons, and ultimately come home to ourselves.
