Anna Ferrer Transforms Tradition in Enchanting New Video: Los panes los hijos

Anna Ferrer by Ernesto Artillo

Menorcan singer Anna Ferrer is back, and this time she’s weaving her family’s history into the fabric of her soundscape. With her fourth album, PA, set to drop via La Castanya, Ferrer brilliantly transposes four generations of bakery craftsmanship into an experimental folk experience that is nothing short of mesmerising. As someone who is utterly smitten with both the music and the accompanying visuals, I can confidently say that this is an album that demands your attention.

Ferrer, born in Menorca in 1993, has long been a pioneer in her musical journey, crafting, composing, and deconstructing songs that echo through time. With previous offerings like Teluria (2017) and Krönia (2019), as well as her stunning collaborations with esteemed artists such as Silvia Pérez Cruz and Marco Mezquida, Ferrer has nurtured a rich tapestry of folk traditions. Her third album, Parenòstic (La Castanya, 2024), earned accolades including a score of 7.6 on Pitchfork and a title of Best Folk Album of 2024 from Enderrock critics, establishing her as a formidable force in the industry.

Now, with PA, Ferrer embarks on her most intimate transmutation yet, honouring her family’s four-generation baking tradition while choosing to express her heritage through music rather than dough. This album serves as a sonic homage to the bakery workshop that shaped her childhood, translating the sounds of her early life into a fresh musical narrative. The warmth of Spanish guitar echoes the tools of her family’s trade, while electric guitar riffs resonate with kneading machines, capturing the essence of baking in an entirely new light. PA stands as a tribute to bread, not only as a staple of life but as a foundational element shaping the way we see the world.

The live performances that accompany PA have a uniquely transformative quality. During her shows—debuted at esteemed locations like Fira Mediterrània de Manresa and L’Auditori de Barcelona, Ferrer ritualises the passing on of her family’s culinary craft. With her father, a skilled baker, sharing the stage alongside talented musicians Toni Llull and Pol Batlle, the performance becomes a rich blend of artistry and trade. This immersive experience blurs the boundaries between music and craft, drawing audiences into a handmade universe steeped in tradition and experimentation.

The release of the new single “Los panes los hijos” comes paired with a visually captivating music video that expands Ferrer’s innovative vision for PA. With poetic reflections on lineage and the cyclical nature of life, Ferrer notes, “The elements of earth, sea, and air follow one another like loaves of bread. Bread fills everyday life and poetry alike.” The hypnotic rhythm of the guitar forms a mantra that echoes the primal connection between family and heritage—creating an irresistible blend of sound that is not only heard but felt.
