Backstage at ISABEL SANCHÍS and its moving rose dress

Madrid Fashion Week. Isabel and Paula, mother and daughter, work together in this brand the first one opened when a girl could not have other ambitions such as being a secretary and forging a family. Isabel left that for teaching, but soon enough started selling her designs until one day, she decided to design a whole collection.

Photographer Ionela Bona went backstage for us during the ISABEL SANCHÍS show. Words and all photos by Ionela Bona! “The eye on the backstage. I specialized in portraying the backstage before a show, it helps me connect with the essence of each brand as the nerves and the vibes of each team are different.”

From there it spread throughout Spain. Then place the economic crisis of 2008, sales plummeted and they sought to internationalize their business. It was then that Arab investors placed the brand on the same level as renowned names such as Oscar de la Renta, a recognition that solidified its position among the international fashion elite.

This collection they present at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid is a fusion between haute couture and streetwear. It surprises in details such as buckles on the hems of dresses typical of jeans, and bombers executed in complex fabrics. Feathers and volumes everywhere, very Isabel Sanchís for today’s woman. The predominant colour is burgundy, which Paula Maiques confesses is her favourite. Although contrasts in light pink and nude stand out, as well as the brand’s classic black.

After so many years, they are still nervous and excited to present the collection, this one in particular because it differs so much from what they are used to designing.

One of the dresses has LED lights hanging on the endings of the feathers that adorn its tail. Another one is a moving rose. Literally. The model gets this upper part that embraces her body and has side cut-outs on the waist. Below that, some layers of fabric are in motion. Quite a large amount of layers move in semi-circular patterns.

On the catwalk, the gasping is immediate as soon as these avant-garde technological designs are in sight, especially the white one with LED lights. The black moving rose is the last one to be shown, and the model takes her time to walk, as she stops from time to time to look at the audience and stare at us while the dress moves.
