“Our editorial shows Mahmoud with a flower, the „Bird of Paradise“, or so-called Strelitzia, which is known for its special shape and colour. We shot this in the heart of Cairo, on the so-called Nile island Zamalek. Cairo is the largest city in the Arab world, with its sister city Gizeh home to around 20 million people. To find a green paradise you need to know the places, like this garden, hidden behind walls, buildings and streets with lots of traffic. But if you find them, you can wind down and enjoy all the botanical variety that is flourishing around the Nile Delta.
Strelitzia symbolizes freedom and overcoming difficulties, reminding people not to stick to the present. The present is made out of experiences from the past and assumptions about the future. Someone can actively transform their future, with the belief of self-efficacy. The Strelitzia growing all over Cairo, people get reminded that they are capable of doing so.
Anna June is a freelance photographer, currently living in Cairo. Originally from Berlin, she shot her first editorial here in collaboration with UNN Management, which is not only the first official modelling agency in Egypt; it is a movement that challenges existing stereotypes and focuses on overcoming barriers set on freedom of self-expression. Working from this creative hub, she identifies with this ambition and does compelling portraits of the talented, young Arab and African people around her.”
