Blog of the Week: Enclose by Prins de Vos

An interview with Prins de Vos, a Holland based photographer. I remember when I saw his photographs for the first time. A friend of mine had one picture of enclose hanging in his room, tender but with a rough edge. It catched my eye immediately. So I asked my friend who made that photograph and that was how I got intoduced by Prins de Vos photographs.

KALTBLUT: Hi Prince, thanks for taking the time to answer some of out questions. What are you up to lately?

Prins: Hi! My name is Prins with an S, but thanks for the compliment. I’m very busy working on a big exhibition that will take place in Amsterdam in a few months. The first solo exhibition of my series Enclose. Besides that I am always busy making new photo’s. Some will end up in Enclose (if I photographed my boyfriend) and some will end up in other series.

KALTBLUT: The project enclose is the project about you and your boyfriend. It’s very personal and tender. What does your boyfriend think about this project?

Prins:
When I started Enclose in 2012 it sometimes was very strange and oncomfortably for him (as well as it was for me) to see yourself in such intimite moments, but that was only for the very first films I developed. He got used to it very quick and now, three years later, it’s just a daily habit for him to see himself on my photo’s.

KALTBLUT: Where do you see you and your boyfriend go in the future?

Prins: To be honest I really don’t like thinking about the future. It freaks me out a bit. I hope we’ll just have a good time in our brand new homes in Amsterdam.

KALTBLUT: What is the most beautiful memory of you and your boyfriend, did you photograph that moment?

Prins:
Right now I’m not thinking about a specific moment but I do think about the time when my boyfriend still lived in Breda in this beautiful, ruinous house. I remember the smell of his room so clearly. It was the smell of flint mixed with rain after a hot day. This was in 2012, when I started Enclose, so I did make a lot of photo’s of us over there.
What is your favourite picture from enclose?
It depends on what mood I am but if I have to tell you then I choose this one.

KALTBLUT: Why do you think people like your photographs so much?

Prins: Even though Enclose is a very personal series, it as well is a story about love, intimacy, attraction and pain. One for one there are just universal themes. I think anyone will recognize somethings of their own lives in the series. And recognition is where the magic happens.

KALTBLUT: All the picture’s of enclose are for sale. Is it hard for you to sell those photographs because they are so personal?

Prins: In the beginning it was but you know, the overwhelming feeling of someone that finds my work good enough to buy it covers every other feeling. Truly, there’s no bigger compliment than someone who thinks my photo will look great in their living room. So if you still have an empty wall out there.. every single photo is for sale! Just kidding. No I’m not.
