Fashion by GIU and other various vintage pieces. “This shoot is an ironic take on Brokeback Mountain, set not in Wyoming but in a small town called Toceno in Northern Italy with modern Italian hunks. This shoot was based on the aesthetics of crust punk and classic Western American style, which is I direct connection to the setting and cast. Portraying queer hinting scenes and being shot in a conservative small town, this shoot was a way for us to express our feelings on repression and feeling safe.”

“Each shot shows a loving or adoring scene of men with each other, and following the original Brokeback Mountain story, one can assume the subjects were acting on their feelings in private or in a place where they felt safe and understood each other. The cowboy and its imagery, being notoriously “macho” and a symbol of power, is called when put into non non-traditional setting or highlighted for its softness.
This softness is then directly contradicted by the prominent (ironic) nationalist American imagery and crust punk styles. The opposition of the aesthetics and the scene is what makes this story so powerful.”

The brand GIU is an Italian brand based in Milan and established in 2023. Created as a label-less brand that provokes the concept of gendered-wear, and that of traditional fashion sizing. GIU draws its inspiration from inclusivity and the reclamation of what we wear. The humorous aspects of the garments hint at the idea that fashion is ridiculous. Challenging the unspoken rules of fashion and how we present ourselves, by wearing what represents us regardless of
outside acceptance, makes us one step further from an industry that thrives on exclusion and shame. Given the creative director’s American upbringing, “patriotic” themes bleed through each collection. Making fun of the oppressive political climate America imposes on the world by making trashy pieces that mimic memes.GIU was born with the intention of creating the least amount of waste possible for each garment produced. All materials used are recycled, donated clothes or fabrics in an effort to eliminate textile waste.
