BWA Wrocław: EUROPA II by Yuriy Biley

Yuriy Biley, a visual artist and curator, presents an exhibition at Studio BWA Wrocław, delving into the historical narratives of Ukraine, Poland, and Germany. Born in 1988 in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, Biley brings a unique perspective to his artwork, exploring themes of emigration, language, and cultural identity.

Rather than focusing solely on major historical events, Biley’s exhibition illuminates the less obvious processes that have shaped the political and systemic landscapes of these countries. Drawing from his personal connections to Ukraine, Poland, and Germany, Biley examines the shifts in freedom and democracy over three decades, from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Through series such as “Freedom for All,” “The Value of These Words Also Depends on You,” and “Picturesque Ukraine,” Biley explores the limits of political influence from both the Soviet Union and Western democracies, challenging conventional notions of geographical borders. His analysis reveals a gradual shift of these influences from West to East, each country experiencing these changes differently.

His perspective on history is particularly relevant in the present day, as Ukraine faces significant challenges to its independence, notably after the russian invasion. Amidst these turbulent times, his work offers a glimmer of hope, suggesting the possibility of a positive outcome.

In addition to his artistic endeavours, Biley is a co-founder and curator of galleries in Lviv and Wrocław, contributing to the cultural landscape of both Ukraine and Poland. His involvement in the Open Group collective has earned recognition, including awards from the PinchukArtCentre and representation at prestigious events such as the Venice Biennale.

Looking ahead, Biley’s influence continues to grow, with Open Group set to represent Poland at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024, under the curation of Marta Czyż. Through his artwork and curatorial endeavours, Biley remains dedicated to exploring the complex intersections of history, culture, and identity within the European context. Biley’s exhibition serves as a testament to the power of art to provoke thought, challenge perspectives, and illuminate the intricacies of our shared human experience.
