Cakes da Killa’s Top 5

New York rapper Cakes da Killa celebrates the release of their upcoming album “Black Sheep” by sharing their Top 5 picks that “take me there while I’m getting ready for a night out. I love dance music, in any form,” says Cakes, “so when I’m prepping I need to hear big beats at the loudest volume. Music is my main form of escapism and these tracks are just a few of my current obsessions in my current rotation. It’s a pretty diverse collection of vibes but I think they come together great in the end – like really good gumbo. I don’t really know when each one came out but they’re all dope.”

“Black Sheep” brims with Cakes’ most incisive lyrics and his most dynamic performances yet, marking the moment he ascends to the rank of a venerated icon – the foremother symbolizing someone who spent their 20s laying the groundwork for modern trailblazers by dedicating themselves fully to the craft. As an artist revered by both fellow musicians and fans, Cakes da Killa is poised to take his place in the spotlight as a superstar.”

Collaborating once again with Sam Katz, whom Cakes teamed up with for the 2022 hit “Svengali,” “Black Sheep” showcases a partnership that exudes ease and confidence. With Cakes penning all the lyrics and Katz crafting the rhythms, the album takes listeners on a mystical journey that stretches from Manhattan’s pulsating clubs to the quieter streets of Brooklyn. This album is a testament to survival; it underscores Cakes’ mastery of his craft, his understanding of his place in the music world, and his refusal to accept anything below his worth.

1. Beloo Horizonte – Wealstarcks, Gratidaoh

“Wealstarcks is my new producer obsession! His taste is so lush and his beats feel rich and nomadic. I can’t wait to work together. The track “Beloo Hoizonte” has a very cool vocal sample and the beat is just so smooth to the ears. Definitely a cool starting point to any playlist.”

2. Body Bend – Gina Jeanz

“Gina Jeanz produces bangers on bangers on bangers and “Body Bend” is no exception. I like beats that feel like a whole experience. Take me on an audio journey. Gina is a master at taking listeners on a ride.”

3. Black Jesus – Valesuchi, Vaskular

“Black Jesus” has to be one of the sickest records I’ve ever heard, ever! I miss provocative lyrics in dance music and messaging that can be both playful and seductive. Let’s bring that back immediately! Everyone seems to be shying away from it this day which sucks. This track delivers.”

4. Ten City – Devotion

“What’s a playlist without a throwback? Nothing! Ten City is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Byron Stingily and iconic producer Marshall Jefferson. “Devotion” was featured on their 1989 release Foundation and displayed those classic powerhouse vocals I miss so much on records.”

5. LS Anthem – Cody Currie, Ally McMahon, Andy K

“I like the groove London native Cody Currie brought on this one. It fuses jazz and house in a fresh way that makes for an easy listen as I’m finally walking out the door to catch my Uber.”
