Martinez Diego – Collection One:

“Whilst in fashion school, they taught me I had to follow a strict structure before starting a collection, there was no space for improv or randomness. This theory stuck with me and held me back from designing what I wanted to design, drawing what I wanted to draw, from sewing how I wanted to sew. Once I arrived in Berlin I discovered that fashion can be very diverse, in the ways it’s done,
thought and shown. It’s no longer just the ultra-perfect pattern making or the same silhouettes worked to be repeated over and over, now pieces can be unique and be valid for it.

How this collection was born was a mix of all my thoughts, my different states of mind and feelings. I refused to have a mood board or write a text, instead, I just started sewing directly with materials that would catch my eye or fabrics I would be drawn to. So at the time, I was feeling like wearing earth tones, and that’s what I projected on the pieces. I was feeling motivated, but blue at times, self-destructive, and somehow all of this got shown on some of the garments.

I was always told how messy I was when working, and I always thought of it as a weakness, but seeing this collection I’ve made, made me realize it can be translated into a strength.”
