Dear Lola

A story that reflects their hard life; moving away from their family and surviving at sea with the harsh conditions they had to face day and night.

The emptiness of what is home for them, the land or the sea?

Showing the people they leave behind on land, their family and friends. That long journey in which the wait becomes eternal and they live in the uncertainty of whether they will see them again.

This editorial is inspired by one of the best-known habaneras: La Bella Lola. “After a year of not seeing land, because the war prevented me from doing so, I arrived at the port where the one my heart adored was” (fragment from La Bella Lola).

Havaneras arose as a result of the colonisation of Cuba. Many Catalan families had land or relatives there and when we lost this colony, many returned to Catalonia. Havaneras already existed in Cuba, but they were called songs. When the Catalans returned, to remember this type of music they named them Havaneras, referring to Havana.

These songs spoke of love and war themes, also recalling the Caribbean landscapes they had known.

This movement ended up creating the “Cantada de Habaneras de Calella de Palafrugell” in 1966, compiling many habaneras sung on the Costa Brava. And year after year it continues to be held.
