“I am 22 years old and was born and raised in Akureyri, Iceland. I am a recent fashion design graduate from Iceland University of the Arts and recently presented my graduate collection at Harpa Opera House in Reykjavík. I recently won 3rd place in the Diploma selection competition at the international design festival Designblok in Prague, where my collection was showcased alongside 15 other finalists from across Europe at the Nová Spirála venue.
About my project:
Silly images have been part of human history for a long time, from frivolous and exaggerated cave paintings to whimsical and funny animated cartoons like the Looney Tunes, to well-thought-out political satire like the modern editorial cartoon. Cartoons have undergone significant changes over the years. They tell a story and are understandable to everyone, regardless of language barriers.
This project explores how the unique aesthetic of Cartoons can be translated into the world of fashion. It does so through exploring the origin and symbolism of caricature, using political cartoons as a framework for storytelling, specifically how they can be used to translate the aesthetics of cartoons into fashion. I chose to address this by identifying specific exaggerations and obscenities in cartoons, using traditional tailoring methods and alternative materials such as Icelandic horse hooves and silicone.” *Kári Þór Barry
