Gallery Weekend Berlin! Hua Wang – Hua’s Gigantic House

Step into the mesmerizing world of Hua Wang, a pioneering voice in contemporary art hailing from Urumqi, China. In her solo exhibition, Gigantic House, the artist delves into the nuanced entanglement of humanity and nature, a relationship strained by advancing technology and profound alienation. With cerebral and emotive vigor, Wang crafts a critical yet poetic exploration of our place within a rapidly transforming landscape.

Growing up in the arid expanse of Urumqi, Hua Wang’s formative years were marked by a stark contrast between nature and the encroaching urban sprawl—a hallmark of China’s booming economy in the 1990s. Surrounded not by unspoiled wilderness but by the relentless rhythm of city life, her perceptions of animals, agriculture, and ecology were painted through the lens of media and Western brands like McDonald’s and KFC, leaving indelible impressions on her psyche.

This unique narrative serves as a springboard for a deeper inquiry: What does it mean to be human in an age where nature is often viewed as a pliable commodity? Which stories and memories curate our connections to the environment and frame our understanding of history and time?

In Gigantic House, Wang adopts the allegorical guise of one of the Earth’s oldest trees—a remarkable 5,000-year-old entity that embodies the essence of time, memory, and metamorphosis. From this vantage point, a complex tapestry emerges, weaving together threads of collective consciousness, cultural evolution, and the delicate equilibrium between humanity and the natural world.

The exhibition is a triumph of sensory engagement, fusing animations, sculptures, and large-scale installations into a fluid experience that beckons visitors to traverse through past, present, and future realms. At its heart, a “tree family” stands, encapsulating a metaphor for the socio-ecological journeys we inhabit, straddling the liminal spaces of science fiction, memory repository, and mythic narrative.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Hua Wang (1990, Urumqi, China) currently divides her time between Beijing and Berlin. A graduate of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, she continued her studies at Central Saint Martins in London, and further honed her craft in Jingdezhen—the historic epicentre of porcelain creation—before completing her education at the Royal College of Art in London. Wang’s artistic oeuvre probes the intricacies of materiality, cultural legacy, and the repercussions of global consumerism on the environment. Her work interrogates anthropocentrism and the friction between artificial and organic entities, engaging with a plethora of media, including sculpture and animation, to reflect on the technological shifts reshaping our world and humanity’s role within it. @huawang_wanghua / huawangstudio.com
