GIMI’s “Dean Street”: A Synth-Laden Love Letter to Soho and Chosen Family

Copenhagen’s own Danish/Kosovan sensation GIMI is back with a nostalgic masterpiece, “Dean Street,” available since June 6th. This is his third single, following the sultry vibes of “RUDE” and the infectious energy of “I LIKE U.” With “Dean Street,” GIMI transports listeners into a whirlwind of emotions, painting a portrait of lost love and the poignant ties of friendship within the vibrant streets of Soho.

Fresh from his electrifying showcase at SPOT Festival, where GIMI captivated a packed venue, he shared “Dean Street” while teasing fans with what lies ahead in his debut album, set to drop later this year.

“I remember the night before my flight, I couldn’t sleep from all the nerves. And as an angsty 20-year-old, I got up and wrote “I’m not running, I’m choosing” on my bedroom wall in big letters.. Just telling this story feels so cringy haha, but looking back, I did both. I ran away from the reality of living in this tiny border town as the only queer kid and I had so many dreams as well. Both dreams for my music, but also dreams of belonging”

In London, GIMI found his true self and a supportive community. He elucidates, “London shaped who I am,” he explains. “Moving there at 20 from my small hometown in South Denmark, I finally felt free to be myself, finding my identity on the very streets I’m writing about in the song. It’s where I fell in love, in the queue to G-A-Y, and where my friends became my chosen family”

“I feel like queer spaces are so important and are such a hub for finding your people. I found so much comfort and safety within these spaces”

Reflecting on the song’s essence, GIMI reveals, “I feel like I created an audial supercut with this song,” he explains. “Like when I hear it back, all the memories come flashing back of me and the gang running around Soho making bad decisions.”

Notably, GIMI’s music has also resonated on the silver screen, with two of his tracks featured in “Sauna,” a groundbreaking queer romantic drama directed by Mathias Broe, marking a historic moment for Danish cinema with its trans lead.

Much like “Sauna,” “Dean Street” is rich in themes of love, identity, and community. These concepts are intricately woven, especially within queer narratives, where friendships often evolve into chosen families—a sanctuary for those seeking acceptance.

“Dean Street” stands as a loving homage to GIMI’s kinship connections, a testament to the spaces that nurtured them in the queer community. Its release is a clarion call to cherish these vital bonds, highlighting their significance in a world where they—and the places that foster them—are all too often overlooked.
