‘Girls, So English’ is an outsider’s homage to British youth culture, viewed through an observer and consumer lens. Having lived in England for many years, this sense of distance from my heritage shapes my work as I explore themes of identity, belonging, and cultural context through photography. The series explores the duality and layers of identity, from echoing Vicky Pollard to romanticizing England’s cold summer sky, exploring football culture and reflecting the tension between pride and domestic violence tied to the sport. A tribute to Britain’s own Rankin, his work on nudes is woven in, with the subject mimicking poses from his photo book as a metaphor for stripped-down British identity.
