“In the house of disarray, the spirits are all that stir the air. Nothing dwells between the rice paper walls but the ghost stories of our vanishing past. Gods of lesser things, quietly shuffle across the unswept tatami. In the countryside, entropy carries on its slow work.
Even in forgotten places, the floorboards creak when no one is home. The kettle left on the stove never to wail again, holds such grief. Phantoms of who we were are ever mingling with what we have become. It is this liminality of our present world that inspired this editorial.
We may adorn ourselves in signifiers of modernity, only to feel the threads sewn by our traditions tightening themselves round us. In our ambition, we attempt to alienate ourselves from our origins. Yet, the past cannot be unbound from us and we become beings of anachronism. The title “Oni’s Dwelling” refers to the Japanese Yokai. Monsters who lived in the caves where once our ancestors resided. We are forever entangled with the pains of what we abandon. As time unwinds before us, the fear of our past lingers in the intimate parts of everyday life”
