Video Premiere: I’MMORTAL – UNCANNY VALLEY

New York and London-based avant-pop sensation I’MMORTAL returns with a striking visual spectacle for her latest single, “Uncanny Valley.” This marks her second music video instalment, further showcasing her knack for blending glitchy soundscapes with captivating imagery.

The music video, artfully directed by Victoria Gong, immerses viewers in an unsettling scene where I’MMORTAL, clad in pearlescent white, faces a robotic clone of herself at a table. The narrative unfolds as she interacts with a dollhouse, has her pulse monitored by nurses, and undergoes a Turing test. As the track crescendos into its pulsating four-on-the-floor bridge, tension builds. The two versions of I’MMORTAL engage in a choreographed confrontation, circling each other in a mesmerizing dance illuminated by flashing lights. Ultimately, one clone overtakes the other, departing the dramatic showdown with an air of nonchalance. Which iteration of I’MMORTAL prevails? That’s a riddle only the viewer can muse upon.

I’MMORTAL shared: “Working on Uncanny Valley’s music video was truly such an amazing collaborative experience. The director Victoria Gong conceptualized the vision, led such a talented team, and was able pull off such a cohesive and stunning video experience. She is such a visionary, yet is so detail oriented, and knew exactly how to go about representing my artistry and my track visually. She really captured the eerie essence of “Uncanny Valley” perfectly, while keeping the integrity of a pop video. Having two identical humanoid A.I. robots undergo a Turing test, and then fight to the death in a choreographed dance-fight scene is definitely my idea of a cutting edge pop video!

I really love incorporating movement into my videos, so I was super excited when Victoria came up with the brilliant idea of having a choreographed fight scene that is also an abstract dance piece. Dove Che, our movement director, is such a genius because he knew exactly how to execute Victoria’s vision of balancing dance and fight. I had the most amazing body double, KiKi Song, who is such a talented and versatile dancer. Together, the four of us rehearsed the movement for a couple of months, I think it really paid off in the end.”.

I’MMORTAL burst onto the digital stage in August 2023 with her debut tech-house anthem, “Versace Spaceship,” and has since dropped five additional tracks, including the originals “Supervillain” (2023) and “KILLED U IN A DREAM” (2024). Among her remixes, she enlisted LA-based producer Droid Bishop for a Synthwave twist showcased on the well-regarded NewRetroWave YouTube channel, along with a melodic techno reimagining by biskuwi, which premiered on DJ Mag Spain. With over a quarter of a million streams on Spotify and accolades from outlets like CLASH Magazine, EARMILK, METAL Magazine, and Wonderland Magazine, I’MMORTAL’s music is rapidly gaining traction.

Originally from California, I’MMORTAL honed her musical instincts in orchestras during her early years, mastering the violin without realizing that these skills would shape her future in music production. A theatre enthusiast, she found her voice in high school musicals, and although she cherishes classical music, her heart resonates with the pulsating beats of EDM, influenced by its gritty basslines and synthetic textures. The creative force behind I’MMORTAL, she infuses her work with a signature audio-visual synesthesia that manifests in her dazzling aesthetics, often exploring themes of death and rebirth, the tension between the organic and the artificial, femininity, and her AAPI identity.

Drawing inspiration from diverse icons like Sevdaliza, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Björk, and SOPHIE, I’MMORTAL’s sound captures the essence of avant-pop, resonating with fans of Billie Eilish and Pastel Ghost alike. “Uncanny Valley” embodies a sonic and conceptual investigation of the blurred lines between human and machine, boasting eerie sound effects such as creaking doors, sharp trap beats, and glitchy autotuned vocals. The track crescendos into a club-ready bridge with thumping bass and dizzying synths, ultimately unravelling into a haunting finish filled with futuristic beeping sounds.
