The Heritage of Rebellion – Namilia’s heritage is infused with a rebellious spirit. How does the Spring/Summer 2024 collection pay homage to the brand’s provocative and trailblazing roots?
Our runway shows always channel a topic that encompasses several political arguments and aesthetic themes. Certainly, this collection was no different and reaffirmed many of our beliefs, especially around sex positivity, social depictions of femininity, and referencing pop culture. Some of Namilia’s favourite runway motifs appeared throughout “In Loving Memory of My Sugar Daddy,” like voluminous hoop skirts, unexpected backless dresses, and cheeky slogans, but in many ways, this collection marked a new era for us.
This new collection seamlessly blends boldness and delicacy. How does Namilia strike the perfect equilibrium between audacious and ethereal in their designs?
The entire Spring/Summer collection followed this ethos, where we wanted to create these gorgeous silhouettes inspired by old-school couture, but infused with the Namilia sensibility that is super sexy, provocative, and has a sense of humour. That really is our brand identity at the core.
Fashion as Storytelling – Each Namilia collection tells a powerful story. What narrative threads can we unravel from the Spring/Summer 2024 collection, and how do they captivate the imagination?
When we first shared a teaser on Instagram with the collection title, the theme of a sugar daddy funeral really excited people. Many in our audience at the show dressed up as though they really were going to their sugar daddy’s funeral and it was so iconic! The references to the cross and Christianity also certainly ignited a lot of…. discourse. The comments and DMs were insane, so many people said really offensive and aggressive stuff to us, but of course, the people who got it were obsessed.
The show’s concept focuses on reclaiming the stereotype of the gold digger as a figure of transcending misogynistic social norms and class stratification. Namilia is inspired by the entrepreneurial savviness of deploying sexuality to navigate modern-day capitalism.
In the Bible, women are depicted in one of two mutually exclusive ways: as the virgin, or as the whore. The myth of Adam and Eve establishes women as the demonic seductress responsible
for the downfall of mankind. Western European society’s inequality and rigid views on gender have been oppressively enforced across the globe. A legacy that remains throughout modern society.
