“Through these two shootings, we wanted to prove the beauty of different corporalities and realities. The invisibility of dissident corporalities is transversal; It crosses gender, identity, social class, race or nationality and affects, to a greater or lesser extent, all of us who inhabit bodies that deviate from the established canons of beauty today.
Fat people spend their lives hiding their bodies, while the audiovisual industry, culture and society ignore us or, in the best of cases, reduce us to a “fat” cliché that is disconnected from multifaceted people, which we all are. On most occasions, we are complicit in a system that oppresses and restricts us. We are victims and executioners. I say this without guilt, but assuming my responsibility in this matter.
The same happens with our non-binarism, so many times we are afraid to show the world how we feel or how we see ourselves, we are forced to dress as people told us to dress, we are forced to hide our personality, our masculinity or femininity, forced to pretend we are someone we don’t are just because of the fear to fit or not in the established canons.
We all deal with difficulties daily and we need to be more compassionate with each other and with ourselves. We also experience success, happiness, joy, sex, and pleasure, we are strong and we need nobody to tell us who we are or what we want.
For many years, I hid my body in baggy, masculine clothing, but I felt like I was betraying myself in some way. Over time, I found a safe space in which I could express myself more genuinely, surrounded by a chosen family that not only tolerated or respected me but also celebrated me.
My gender and my identity depend only on me. I am who I am, and I don’t need anyone to accept that, I just need them to respect our reality.
We exist, we are here, and we are not hiding ourselves anymore.”
