Auguste Friedrich uses photography as a form of encounter.
His images are not captured from a distance, but emerge from direct, mutual exchange. Rather than chasing the perfect pose, he seeks an unagitated presence, those moments when protective layers fall away, the camera fades into the background, and trust becomes tangible.
Growing up as an outsider in rural Germany, keen observation early on became Friedrich’s way of navigating his surroundings.
The visual language of the 90s and the energy of music television offered a crucial sanctuary where identity felt fluid – influences that still resonate in the playful, often analogue aesthetic of his work today.
A central focus of his practice is the visibility of queer identities. Under the guiding theme of “Queer Superpowers” Friedrich portrays the quiet strength of those who exist beyond the norm, capturing the complexity and radical honesty found within vulnerability.
His adopted home of Berlin serves as a powerful sounding board:
“The city can feel raw, direct, and sometimes broken, but it also allows for these very soft, quiet moments.”
This ambivalence reflects in his work, which moves effortlessly between direct eroticism and gentle intimacy. Within a sex-positive context, he creates spaces where individuality can exist entirely free from performance.
Through extensive dialogue on set, Friedrich allows his subjects to fully arrive within themselves before releasing the shutter. Yet, for all the emotional directness, he always maintains a lightness, proving that depth, humour, and desire inherently belong together.
