Marsèll Unveils The Calypso Light: A Dance of Light and Materiality by Frederik Fialin

The ephemeral whispers of creativity entwine with the tangible embrace of materiality in a captivating dance reminiscent of calypso. This enchanting interplay comes to life through The Calypso Light, a striking lamp that illuminates and transforms its medium’s essence.

Danish designer Frederik Fialin’s vision is brought to fruition as he reinterprets the lamp, recasting it in Marsèll’s exquisite leather. Crafted from this lavish material, the lampshade invites us to appreciate the delicate balance between the fleeting and the substantial, encouraging a tactile exploration of softness and form. As the lamp evolves from a mere object to a luminous installation, it captures the essence of intimacy and connection.

This collaboration heralds a new chapter for Marsèll, known for pushing the boundaries at the intersection of fashion and design, following notable partnerships with Soft Baroque, Gonzalez Haase, and Matylda Krzykowski. Marco Cima, creative director and founder of Marsèll, expresses his enthusiasm: “A year after opening our first flagship store, we are thrilled to collaborate with the talented Danish designer Frederik Fialin. This project underscores the authentic connection between our brand identity and a designer whose vision aligns closely with our creations and the broader radical design movement.”

Cima continues, “Together, we have developed a lamp crafted from our leather and introduced a new, larger, and more striking version specifically designed for this site-specific installation.” At Marsèll, the celebration of ardour and authenticity in craftsmanship resonates deeply. “Through knowledge and collaboration, it is possible to create something truly unique and of genuine value.”

Originally unveiled at the Everyday Exquisite exhibition during Berlin Art Week, The Calypso Light now finds a new expression through an exclusive partnership with Marsèll. Using leather as a lampshade introduces a matte finish that evokes painted surfaces, exemplifying a shared pursuit of material exploration. The design simplifies while maintaining formal rigour, reflecting the purity of vision without sacrificing creativity.

For this special installation, three leather-clad Calypso Light floor lamps are showcased, accompanied by two oversized suspended versions that fill the flagship store with transformative light. “Elevating the material to eye level offers a fresh perspective on leather, a staple in footwear yet rare in this context,” observes Fialin. This collaboration marks Studio Frederik Fialin’s inaugural venture with leather, presenting an exciting challenge that promises to inspire and innovate.
