Sara Valdez says: “I’m a 22 year old portuguese artist, my love for jewelry started when I was little, I remember that piercing my ears at 16 was a major point in my life cause i could fnally wear and buy so many stuf to adorn myself. I started doing jewelry with unconventional materials out of necessity and is something i grew to really like cause it allows me to push myself and get out of my comfort zone.
I’m inspired by everything i experience in life, whether it’s a book i’m reading, a movie i saw or even a conversation i had, I’m trying to bring my life to my art and vice versa.
More than just fesh is a conceptual jewelry collection inspired by body dysmorphia, a psycho- logical disorder where a person believes they have faws they don’t have or tend to exaggerate a minimal problem. They have delusional thoughts where they have obsessive rituals like being in front of the mirror compulsively looking for faws. Mirror checking is a common ritual per- formed by people with body dysmorphic disorder, where they excessively check their appear- ance for long periods of time. They’ll use the mirror to confrm that their perceived faw is still there and/or is still as bad as they recall.
Every jewelry piece was focused on the feelings of people who experience this disease daily, seeking to transmit them trough weight, irregular shapes, colors and mirrored materials.
The idea of working on body dysmorphia came to life because of my own experience with the disease, at the moment felt right to bring this to my art, maybe as a form of release, for myself, I had the weight on me for so long that this was the only way i found to talk about it.”
