In a spellbinding debut at Berlin Fashion Week, Multipliancy catapulted Laurin Schuler into the limelight as a designer to watch. Set against the stark backdrop of Spreehalle Berlin, Schuler’s show transcended mere fashion presentation, merging elements of art, narrative, and performance into a cohesive spectacle that was as thought-provoking as it was visually enthralling.
At just 24 years old and freshly emerged from the halls of Kunsthochschule Weissensee Berlin, Schuler has crafted an innovative concept that intertwines his collections with groundbreaking show formats, creating an experience that resonates deeply with attendees. Each presentation is designed not just to be seen but felt, inviting viewers into a personal, immersive journey where fashion becomes a commentary on connection and transformation.
The collection itself was a rich tapestry of sophisticated tulle layers, elevated collars, and intricate textile prints—all echoing the theme of multiplicity. Yet, it was Schuler’s audacious presentation that truly captivated me. Models shrouded in expressive, embroidered tulle masks carried these prints as living artworks, circulating through an emotional and surreal realm that blurred the lines between visibility and anonymity.
Illuminated by a dynamic beam of light that danced with the rhythm of the show, each ensemble was meticulously highlighted, guiding the audience’s focus through fluid choreography. The models’ movements spoke volumes, echoing themes of transparency and obfuscation—each step a deliberate narrative that engaged and intrigued.
In Multipliancy, Schuler delves into the allure of complexity. Each layer, each intricately designed print, unfolds a story unto itself. Collaborating with photographer Anton Röntz, he crafted a technique that allows images to be divided into multiple layers and printed on sheer tulle. This innovative approach produces a mesmerizing dimensionality, transforming what might begin as a simple dress into an independent work of art illuminated under the spotlight.
Set to a pulsating score by Moritz Kniepkamp, the performance crescendoed into a haunting finale as models coalesced into a sophisticated tableau, offering a final, poignant glimpse into the threads that wove this captivating collection together—all before slipping away into the shadows.
Laurin Schuler’s Multipliancy heralds a new era in fashion, one that tantalizes the senses and challenges conventional narratives. Keep your eyes peeled; this is just the beginning for the innovative visionary redefining our understanding of fashion’s boundaries.
