Portraits of Pride: Elska’s Newest Chapter in Chisinau

Elska unveils its fifty-second instalment in a captivating series that explores the stories and lives of men through a distinctive gay lens. This edition takes us to Chisinau, the capital of Moldova—Europe’s least-visited and economically challenged country. Within its pages, readers are invited to discover a diverse array of local gay men, portrayed through a rich tapestry of intimate photography and personal narratives.

“I had contemplated bringing my project to Moldova for many years, but I hesitated, fearing it might not resonate,” notes Elska’s editor, writer, and chief photographer, Liam Campbell. “I was concerned that Chisinau might be too small, conservative, or closeted to find subjects willing to share their stories. However, I soon realised these were misconceptions, deeply rooted in stereotypes that paint Moldova solely as the ‘poorest country in Europe.’ I decided it was time to explore it firsthand.”

Campbell describes his experience in Chisinau as unexpectedly delightful, particularly noting the vibrant atmosphere following a recent Pride event that was marked by record attendance and a peaceful celebration. However, he also observed a divide within the LGBTQ+ community, which mirrors the city’s demographic split between Romanian and Russian influences. “I found that the gay spaces tended to cater to one group over the other, leading to tension and division,” he explains. “Discussions about political and social issues were frequent among the local men we met, making this one of our most politically charged editions—albeit still showcasing plenty of alluring, naked men!”

The narrative of Elska Chisinau emerged from thorough diaries chronicling Campbell’s experiences throughout the trip, intertwining conversations and cherished moments spent with local individuals. These men participated in a photoshoot that merged street style with intimate home settings, creating a collection that offers a profound glimpse into their lives. The result is an engaging reading experience that can be likened to a blend of a sexy anthropology journal and a queer art book.

Elska Chisinau is available in a collectable print edition as well as in a convenient downloadable e-format. Additionally, the companion e-zine Elska Ekstra Chisinau features four more local men and their narratives, along with hundreds of outtakes from the Chisinau photoshoots. Both editions can be ordered online or at selected retailers globally. For more information and subscription details, visit the Elska website: www.elskamagazine.com.
