Operating at the intersection of recordings, installations, and immersive live performances, Jung Latch has established himself as a true oddity in the vibrant London electronic scene. The Maltese-Irish audiovisual artist continually meanders through a myriad of genres and formats, making it nearly impossible to confine his work to a single genre or label. This boundary-defying approach not only highlights his artistic versatility but also reflects the eclectic nature of contemporary electronic music.
With his pioneering sound art initiatives in collaboration with the sonic research group Temporary Media and his own label, Fragment on Machines, Jung Latch is masterfully bridging the chasm between contemporary art and the thriving underground club circuit. His work challenges conventional aesthetics and encourages audiences to engage deeply with the interplay between sound and visual experience.
Born Rupert Galea in East London, Latch’s formative years were steeped in classical music training. This foundational education shaped his early artistic sensibility, leading his first foray into the world as Jung Latch with a contribution to the SODAA Club’s debut compilation album. Fueled by an insatiable curiosity, he ventured further into the realm of sonic experimentation, culminating in a master’s degree at the University of the Arts London (UAL). This academic endeavour allowed him to refine his avant-garde approach to sound and visual art, cementing his status as a forward-thinking artist in the industry.
Since those early beginnings, Latch has gained recognition for his prolific output on cult labels such as Nü Kvlture and Mute Artefact. His reputation has skyrocketed, particularly for his immersive audiovisual performances that have graced esteemed venues including IKLECTIK and Corsica Studios. More recently, he showcased his innovative prowess for the Cologne-based collective Atlas Sound, further solidifying his standing within the global electronic music community.
In a striking contrast to his previous release, [Stonetape]—an ambient mixtape filled with field recordings and generative sound design—Jung Latch is set to unveil his latest EP, Len Sen. This upcoming project represents a radical departure, plunging headfirst into raw, dystopian rave territory while still exhibiting his signature style of abstract sound design combined with razor-sharp rhythms. It’s a testament to his adaptability and unwavering commitment to sonic exploration.
Drawing inspiration from a wide array of influences, including the minimalist sound design of Steve Reich, the visual motifs of ’90s anime, and cyberpunk culture, Len Sen is a five-track odyssey that immerses listeners in hypnagogic textures and industrial soundscapes. Each track works harmoniously to sonify a technodystopian wasteland, where the echoes of lost futures resonate within an exhilarating aura of controlled chaos.
With a nod to genre influences such as early dubstep, big beat, IDM, new age music, and soundtracks, the EP intricately weaves an atmosphere imbued with unease. As listeners navigate through post-human landscapes alive with complex, evolving textures and piercing percussion, they are invited to experience the familiar from the unique perspective of an autistic mind—offering a fresh lens through which to view sound and meaning.
Len Sen is, by design, a veritable Frankenstein’s monster—an unholy amalgamation of reworked ideas, last-minute tweaks, and spontaneous recordings devoid of context. This chaotic brilliance embodies Jung Latch’s relentless pursuit of artistic authenticity, ensuring that he remains one of the most compelling and unpredictable voices in contemporary electronic music.
