Memphis LK, the London-based DJ, producer, and singer, cranks up the intensity with her new EP Say. This five-track collection, featuring collaborations with Australian innovators DJ BORING and Willaris. K, is a high-octane ride through some of the edgiest corners of the electronic scene.
Since relocating from Melbourne over a year ago, Memphis LK has thrown herself into the heart of London’s vibrant nightlife and ventured into clubs across Europe. Her sets are a whirlwind of early 2000s trance, jungle, breaks, electro, and techno, carrying the energy of a summer spent playing at The Cause, Phonox, Field Day, and Way Out West. Sharing the stage with talents like DJ Heartstring, Effy sim0ne, Pretty Girl, Barry Can’t Swim, horsegiirL, Brutalismus 3000, and Yaeji, she has more in store with upcoming tours in Australia and the UK, bringing her road-tested sounds along for the ride.
Since her solo debut in 2021, Memphis LK’s dance-pop has garnered acclaim from noteworthy outlets including The Guardian, Pitchfork, and Notion. For this EP, she pivots from her usual songwriting techniques to production approaches that enrich her sound with depth and emotion. It’s this connection to the soulful elements of dance music that she passionately pursues. “They’re synonymous with the experience of clubbing – vehicles to feel the warmth and connection. To bring these out in my records, I used my voice like an instrument, and brought in more samples, textures and organic sounds.”
Immerse yourself in the vibrant sounds of ‘Say,’ a dynamic collaboration with Willaris. K, where a driving rhythm and bursts of joy anchor the EP’s title track—perfectly showcasing her fresh sonic direction during the peak of summer. ‘Don’t Touch Me Baby,’ featuring DJ BORING, stands out with its bold and commanding presence. Crafted in just two days, it delivers a club-ready punch that resonates from start to finish. “This one’s for the baddies who just want to have fun. It embodies being in your element, and feeling emboldened.”
In ‘Prosper,’ the track masterfully pairs gritty textures with a wistful sonic uplift, evoking imagery of new blossoms after a harsh winter. The journey begins with an intense struggle and resistance but gradually transitions into a soundscape filled with the beauty that perseverance often rewards. Influences from Burial, Grimes, and Overmono shape ‘Need You Now,’ a powerful and emotionally driven piece capturing the weight of a reluctant breakup. Additionally, ‘Just The Way You Are’ infuses early 2000s nostalgia, as it reimagines the 2002 classic by Italian electronic group Milky, a timeless favourite for many. “My cover maintains that feel-good euphoric, nostalgic energy of the original, while giving it an intentional club spin.”
