Rooney Ong Jing Ren graduated with a BA degree in Graphic Design, from The Design School (TDS), Taylor University. Rooney is an illustrator and designer based in Malaysia. Most of his time spent on drawing, especially at midnight because “that’s when the inspiration came the most”.
KALTBLUT: What is your artistic background?
Rooney: I graduated with a BA degree in Graphic Design, from The Design School (TDS), Taylor University. I am an illustrator and designer based in Malaysia. Most of my time spent on drawing, especially at midnight because that’s when the inspiration came the most. I love drawing since i was a kid. It was there, just like walking and talking, it was a natural behaviour.
KALTBLUT: What is your favourite Medium to use?
Rooney: Artline pen 0.05. That is one of my favourite pen of all time.
KALTBLUT: What inspires you when you’re drawing?
Rooney: I like listening to sad music and reading quotes, but mostly I find that it’s feeling I have felt or read a long time ago that come back to me. The feelings that you found inspiring when you were starting out usually stay with you. I find myself drawing little pictures or symbols that are somehow connected.
KALTBLUT: Do you have any mentor, artist that inspires you?
Rooney: Yes. I always look up to Spanish born, NY based artists Conrad Roset. He draw inspiration from women to create the Muses, his most personal collection. “I search the beauty the body exudes, I like drawing the female figure.”
KALTBLUT: Most of your composition always included a vegetal element. Are you close to the nature?
Rooney: Yes, my hometown Triang, Pahang. Pahang is the third largest state in Malaysia. A lot of jungle around. Nature has played a vital role in my creative expression. The art I create from nature’s inspiration becomes part of my personal and cultural identity, I guess.
KALTBLUT: What are you working on at the moment?
Rooney: I am currently working as a graphic designer/artist for a wall company, Wall Tailor. Wall Tailor dedicated to delivering high quality products for all interior spaces. From their innovative whiteboard paint and luxurious texture paint surface. I have just started artistic wall doodling service with Wall Tailor and I am loving it. More project to come for sure
